The release of the tablet has definitely thrown the mobile computing market into a spin. I was putting off getting a tablet because I didn't know what I would use it for, and now that I've got one, I still don't know what I'm going to use it for. But having said that, I am determined to utilise it to the fullest, starting by using it as my mobile comms and digital storage device whilst we're away. It is light, does everything that Greg has mentioned like auto start up etc. Lisa, if you're only looking for something as a photo storage device then explore other options like portable HDD that allow you to stick your memory straight in and download automatically. Specialist photo shops have these in abundance.
I do not see any difference between a tablet and a mini laptop. In fact, and this is purely opinion and no technical basis behind it, I reckon the tablet would be a better option, purely because everything for the tablet is tablet specific whereas mini laptops components are reduced and squeezed into a smaller box. Like the tablet, upon the mini laptop release I couldn't understand the need for one.
The other point to consider is the arguments of the "i hate everything apple" brigade versus the "apple is superior" team. I'm probably the latter, but ultimately I'm in the "why the hell does windows keep bothering" camp. However I have used both Android devices and Apple mobile devices and, well, the best I can say is, nice try Google, but if you're going to copy, at least make it as easy to use. Yes the iDevices have some limitations, but everything that is needed is available. Our home is applefied, so obviously we are better suited for those products, but the Samsung phone of my father on Android, aside from already having failed after 6 months, is a little confusing and not simple to use.
The bottom line in all this is, it is personal preference. Lisa, go down to Dick Smith or JB HiFi or something like that and check out everything in one sitting and make the decision from there. Whatever you choose will work for you, just as long as it is what you need. Does that help?
