DCA's $1 billion Expansion

Postby KeithS » Wed Jul 18, 2007 7:49 pm

Al Lutz over at Mice Age has a lot of good inside sources - it was Al who initially announced Disney's plans for the Pirate makeover of Tom Sawyer's Island (an announcement that was initially refuted by Disney, but turned out to be true).

Now he has got the scoop on the DCA upgrade that has been in the works for some time. It talks of the approval of $1 billion for DCA, and some of what we can expect for the money.

If you have an interest in the Anaheim parks, I suggest you head over to Mice Age now and read this article:
http://www.miceage.com/allutz/al071707a.htm

There are sunny days ahead for DCA!

I like DCA (couldn't say "love") but they want to move it to the same or even better quality than Tokyo DisneySea - now that would be something :)

I (we) are also fans of DCA, but what they're talking about here is going to be a fantastic result. The only concern with projects of this scale is the money they're throwing around and the high risk of cost blowout. $1b today will in reality be 2 or 3 by the time the next few years come around, which will put in jeopardy their plans. I hope for the sake of the final product that TDA as they refer the management team as, accept these sorts of cost blowouts and strive forward with the original plans and not make cuts for the sake of a dollar and original budget.

This article was quite a good update on things happening and rumours. I for one am glad they they're going back to unique marketting for the 2 resorts. Having not seen the results first hand just seeing photos and website stuff with Disney Resorts just didn't seem right. Afterall, Disneyland will always be the Happiest Place on Earth.

I also took notice of the HR and recruitment issues. Seems like the Disney HR team are being too 21st century warm and fluffy that is rife across large corporations nowadays. You would think that there would be as many people who WANT to be there as there would who just want a job. I hope that by the time I return to a Disney park that these are just bad memories for HR and that they are once again hiring people that care about Disney parks and about creating that "magic" we expect to see. Perhaps Disney should also look harder overseas with plans or visa (greencard) sponsorship, to source people with international flavour who would be desperate to make Disney magic! Pick me!! Pick me!! :D

wow... imagine what it feels like to say .... " ok... well, how's a billion sound for the reno's?"

That kind of money really blows my mind.

But the staffing thing really was a concern. Lets hope they wake up and rectify that one day soon ( before I finally get there for instance).
I still say I wouldn't want to work there.
I wouldn't ever want to lose that sense of magic and the 'wow' factor.
or put another way, I'd hate to have something I dream about doing, turn into a nightmare.
I only ever want to be a tourist at Disney. :)

Yeah - I wonder how that meeting went.

I can just imagine imagineers wheeling in these large artworks of what they could do to DCA. And the steely-eye executives looking at each one, not saying anything. Then the Imagineers saying "we could scale back some of this I suppose", then Bob Iger standing up and saying "No, build it! Meeting over"

How cool - of course I made all that up and it was probably not as dramatic :)

It's good to hear that money is going into DCA, although I was always of the opinion that DCA's main problem was one of marketing and not necessarily in need of a major injection of capital. Granted, a few new rides and the odd potted plant couldn't go astray, but for what it is it is a nice 'alternative' to the 'other' park across the promenade.

My concern now is that this is money that might have been headed to Hong Kong at some stage, but has been redirected to Anaheim. As Lutz puts it in that article: "Lasseter happily keeps the bigwigs focused on Anaheim so they aren't too distracted by the continuing struggles in Hong Kong and Paris".

Things are now ticking along nicely in DCA with their makeover.

The Silly Symphony Swings opened today for guests, The World of Color opens in less than a fortnight, the Little Mermaid and Carsland construction is coming along nicely, and the red trolley car tram tracks are being laid around the tram route.

And today, they unveiled the new logo for DCA:
Image

So, what do you think. Do you notice that it is no longer Disney's California Adventure? The apostrophe S has been removed. So I guess it is just California Adventure now (with a Disney logo as ownership). In another new publication, they referred to it a The Disney California Adventure Park.

What, it'll still be DCA to us :D

I like it but the irony is not lost on me. The work happening in the entrance and around the main area with the red trolley and the new theatre etc, is trying to make it look like California in the time Disney arrived, and then they go and change the name from Disney's being when he was there, to the branded Disney. But I don't mind the change and it will always be DCA.

I also don't know if that font is really representative of the 1920's era they are trying to recreate. That's nit-picking I realise, but have a look at the font they're using on Silly Symphony Swings http://mintcrocodile.smugmug.com/photos ... LLi-X3.jpg- that is much more 1920's looking.

Still, I like the boldness and the colours - and think it is a pretty good logo.

Now if you boys were scrapbookers, you would know that that font is known in the scrapping world as the 'mickey' font and well utilized in many a Disney Album.

I for one, am delighted for the change, cos with the click of a mouse, I can make it yellow and stick it on my pages and journaling with way more authenticity now.

I'm not too fussed about the loss of the apostrophe and S either... it was always a Disney add-on sale ( for want of a better description) anyway, so I don't have an issue with them making it more legit. I do like how they are making it a park worthy ( by American standards) of a stand alone visit though... its only going to make what is already a great park, fresh and inviting me for another visit.

Quite right and I stand corrected - it is period correct for the 1920's :D

Was just reading through the Micechat update on all the reno's going on, and the photos were kind of shocking to me... yes, I knew that there was a lot of contruction going on, but honestly, almost half the park is being dug up or covered up or fixed up or built up. If I were traveling from Australia to visit DL/DCA right now, I'd be a little disappointed by how much is not accessable if I wasn't aware of the situation before getting there.

I know that it's going to be AMAZING when its all done, and in true Disney style, the scale of everything is mindboggling, but boy, I was blown away by how much of what I remember being there, just is not anymore.
Having said that, I LOVED how the California letters are candycanes at the moment. I thought they were going to be removed, and here we are, 2 1/2 years after I was there, and they're still there. I'm glad they're are though... for however long they are, I never wanted them to go in the first place.

Hehe - they're going straight after Christmas :D

Yep - the amount of work going on at the moment is amazing - it was massive when we were there last September but it is even more widespread now.

It is a necessary evil though, and all of the top attractions at DCA are still there and operational. Most of old stuff that has disappeared was mainly cosmetic or rubbish (Maliboomer!) and is being replaced by some amazing lands, attractions and theming. I can't wait to visit sometime after 2012 - it'll be a completely new and unrecognisable park by then. Entering through the new entrance and dodging the red trolley cars while walking down Buena Vista - all themed to 1920's Hollywood, is going to be such an improvement compared to the dodgy arrival under the GG Bridge with the garish shops with their concrete theme :D
