New Official Disneyland Hotel to be Built

Disney today filed plans to build a brand new official Disney luxury hotel at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim.  The new hotel will be built on the current site of the Downtown Disney car park.

There has been no official word from Disney about this yet, however Miceage has links to some concept art and a video from The Orange County Register.  Just follow the link here:

No complete dates yet but I would guess that it would coincide with the opening of Star Wars.  And given the hotel's location is very close to the Star Wars land construction, I'm wondering if they have a separate entrance to Disneyland like the Grand Californian has for DCA??  That may be a great incentive to spend the extra cash to stay there if you are a Star Wars fan.

I'm amazed by just how much they seem to keep sqeezing into what is a finite amount of land.

I have to admit, I'm a little excited by this. Disney hotels are always themed so well, I can't wait to see what they come up with.

I have stayed in a lot of places, from noisy, smelly dorms to 5 star hotels and, while I was underwhelmed by the Hotel Santa Fe in Paris I was extremely impressed by the Disneyland Hotel in Hong Kong and very glad I splurged to stay there a night. One of the nicest rooms I've ever stayed in and subtly Disney.

It has been over a year but today Disney has released details about their new hotel for the resort area and some other interesting information.

The new unnamed hotel is now going to be built over the western edge of Downtown Disney - where the AMC theatre, ESPN Sportszone and Earl of Sandwich now sits - that has been a big open area for many years and is really the walkway to the Disneyland Hotel. You can see more images on the Disney Parks Blog here:
https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2017/10/new-hotel-disneyland-resort/

Construction begins mid-2018 for a 2021 completion.  The hotel concept art looks kind of boring to me - but I guess we'll have to wait a while to see what else is planned for it.

In other news, they are building a new parking garage on the west side of the resort next to the existing one. It should be complete in 2019 in time for Star Wars Land.

What was missing from today's announcements was further work on the Eastern Gateway - the Harbor Blvd overpass and new parking lot behind the Harbor Blvd hotels - it looks like this plan is now shelved for the time being and the old Carousel will just be left in mothballs until Disney and the Anaheim Council can come to some arrangement to get it started again.

It certainly doesn't shout "Disney" but it did say that they were going for sophistication.

Would they have to meet any planning regulations on the look of the place or are they a force unto themselves in Anaheim?

Not sure about the look having to fit in with Anaheim as it is all within the resort area.  I think it is positioned in a weird spot - being right in the middle of the walkway between Disneyland Hotel and Downtown Disney.  DL Hotel people effectively have to walk through the new hotel to get to the parks.

Taking a leaf out of the "merchandise outlet between the end of the ride and the exit" book? :-)

This is exactly what I have been saying to people.  I love the themed hotels; GC at Cali and WL at WDW are my favourites.  I wish they'd do a Grand Floridian style, but i imagine it would be horribly out of place in Anaheim.

Were there any pictures of what the inside of the rooms will look like? Maybe that's where the magic will be.

The theming is great if they were going for that 1980's beachside generic hotel look :)

I'm liking the look and placement of this. On the location, looking at the placement in respect to the DL hotel, I'm thinking that the future of the original may be limited.  It wouldn't be too difficult to slowly dismantle the old buildings, construct new ones that resemble the new buildings and incorporate the pool areas into the new hotel.

Hi Anthony - great to see you around here again!

I never thought of that - there was talk about 10 years ago about pulling down the DL Hotel and building a proper modern 5-star Disneyland Hotel like the other resorts have but it was shelved in favour of a refurbishment...now your idea makes a lot more sense - build this new hotel, pull down the old DL hotel - and build something worthy of the Disneyland Hotel name...
