Star Wars Construction

Postby KeithS » Mon Sep 28, 2015 2:55 pm

On the Disney Parks Blog today (http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2 ... alifornia/), they've provided some information about the construction of the Star Wars land which will commence in January.

Here is the important bits from the blog post:
Disney Parks is also preparing to take guests to a galaxy far, far away with new Star Wars-themed lands. With groundbreaking scheduled to take place in 2016 for our largest single-land expansions ever, building the new 14-acre lands will be major projects at both Disneyland park in Southern California and Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida.

Work to make room for this new land at Disneyland park in California will require the Rivers of America and the Disneyland Railroad to close temporarily. The following will suspend operations at the end of the operating day on January 10:

The Disneyland Railroad, including all stations

Attractions along the Rivers of America, including:
“Fantasmic!”
Mark Twain Riverboat and Sailing Ship Columbia
Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer Island
Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes

We look forward to all of these attractions reopening in the future.

Elsewhere in Frontierland, Big Thunder Ranch – including Big Thunder Ranch Barbecue, Big Thunder Ranch Petting Farm and Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree – will close permanently at the end of the operating day on January 10.

So there you have it! No railroad, Fantasmic, Tom Sawyer or Rivers of America activities for a couple of years. This is a big an exciting project but it will have an impact on your park visits - so keep informed via the internet if you are planning a visit!

oh wow... kinda sad that the ranch places are closing... I always managed to find characters for meet n' greets here that I hadn't seen anywhere else. That's a BIG chunk of the park missing as well, with all the Rivers and associated attractions closed possibly for years... Lets hope Disney don't take forever to get this built.

I read somewhere that it won't likely be finished until 2019! But the railroad and Fantasmic etc will be shut for just two years. Anyway - I think it will be fun watching the construction, just like when DCA was being built.

Oh wow... 2019?

I guess by the time I get back to Anaheim the rail will be open again, cos I'm planning other parks before then anyway so its not too big of a concern to me.
It'd be sad to miss Fantasmic and the railroad if you were on a 'once in a lifetime' type trip though.

There is quite a lengthy article on Miceage about the building of the new Star Wars lands. You can view it here: http://micechat.com/111703-miceage-star ... isneyland/

While Miceage haven't always been correct with their rumours, Disney's official twitter account today confirmed that the Rivers of America will take a new route after the Star Wars construction, which confirms some of what Miceage are saying. So given that, I think Miceage are probably right on the mark with their rumours around the Star Wars land. Have a read and let us know what you think!

I am a bit annoyed they will be shortening the rivers of america. It feels like something you cant just change. I love the back section it really makes you feel like you out in the middle of nowhere. Now its gonna be a whirlwind trip around the rivers. Oh well progress I guess and all that.

Is it possible to not be a Star Wars fan?

My husband.
Walking past the tv last year while the boys were watching Empire Strikes Back: "Huh. So Harrison Ford ISN'T Luke Skywalker? Huh."
Watching bits and pieces of Revenge of the Sith on Saturday night: "Wait. Luke and Leia are TWINS?!?! I didn't even know they were brother and sister!"

So, yeah, it's possible! LOL

The boys are very much into Star Wars right now though so there is hope yet. Not that I'm a massive fan, but I did grow up in the 80s with two older brothers so I have enough interest. Craig ALSO grew up in the 80s though so I don't know what happened there.

I am at a loss for words. I didn't realise your husband grew up in a small hut in Antarctica, without human contact and with only penguins to eat. It must have been horrible for him.

He's going to be shocked when he finds out who Luke's father is.

But...but...

I guess I was just perfect Star Wars fodder when it was first released. Teenage male who was already into Science Fiction and with an overactive imagination.

The amazing thing is that I have seen a five year old obsessed by the series, including the original trilogy, despite absolutely no prompting from his parents. This is after almost 40 years.

Oh, by the way, I assume everyone is gearing up for "Back to the Future Day" tomorrow?

My boys. Jared got obsessed last year or the year before and then Josh this year. Josh is only four, Jared was either four or five. You can see how much encouragement they received from their father (who, BTW, already knows DV is Luke's dad, but from parodies, not from the movies!), and whilst I kinda like the movies, I hadn't watched them in years before they started showing interest in them.

Looking forward to all three of them taking part in the Jedi Training Academy next year -/

You know - for all the times I've been to Disneyland, I never once set foot into Big Thunder Ranch and now I guess I never will.

This could lead to a whole new topic - what haven't you done at the Disneyland Resort?

I booked for Big Thunder Ranch for next tuesday.  Just a one last time lunch there.  Problem is its expected to rain big next week so they may just close it early.   We were there before christmas to ride the train one last time before it closed and I think it was closed then due to rain.

I wonder what happens to the staff at big thunder when it closes.  I might ask around and see.  Disney is pretty good with staff though so may simply move them around.

Oh and the rivers of america and the island will be closing also due to construction.  I have heard the indian village will be going away though thats not official as far as i know.
