History of Sailing Ship Columbia

Postby ajp » Wed Sep 24, 2008 1:25 pm

I was on Miceage today and read part 1 of an article on the History of the Sailing Ship Columbia. I don't normally read these history pieces they have, but I think I might from now on. Click on the link and have a read, I found it quite interesting.

I'll have to pop into Miceage later and have a read. Thanks for mentioning it Anthony - I find all history stuff about DL interesting. I remember a couple of years ago I read a whole big article on the history of the trains on the DL Railroad  I'm not normally a train person, but anything about DL, I just eat it all up :)

The article also talks about the Pieces of Eight and what they were, which I didn't know before. For me it explained the name of the shop next to the Blue Bayou (as well as the reference in the movie of course, but the shop did come before the movie).

That was a good article - I can't wait until the second part. Steve de Gaetano's previous articles on the Disneyland railroad have also been good reads. I like how he tells the real story, then interweaves the Disney version.

Part 2 is up (I know it's been there a while, but I was away for a week or so recently)

3rd installment is just up (can you tell I'm enjoying these? )

There is one bit I like which I'll quote:
Wallace and his company were once again called in, this time to completely re-rig and re-deck the ship. Because the work was performed in Fowler's Harbor during Park operating hours within sight of guests, the work crews wore period costumes so as to blend in thematically.
How good is that!?

Yep - shame there were no photos of that reconstruction - must have been quite a sight!

4th installment of the Columbia Story. This one is a little light on interest, but worth reading just to keep up I suppose.

(Argghhh - you beat me to it again.)

I like the comparison photos in this edition to the Lady Washington - I found the rigging talk and information about the painting etc interesting too.
