The CALIFORNIA letters at DCA

I read recently on another forum that the huge CALIFORNIA letters out the front of DCA will be removed for their upcoming update to the park.

Has anyone heard anything about this?
Is their removal permanent or just temporary for the length of the refurb? I really hope its not permanent.... I haven't seen them yet!

From what I read, it seemed that it was going to be happening in the not too distant future.

From what I've read, the new entry gates will be located around about where the california letters are now, but that refurb is probably 12 months or so away. but yes they are more than likely to disappear in the future. It is a shame, but the plans for the new entry gates sounds exciting. I'm looking forward to the DCA makeover.

Yep, they will be going permanently, but as Anthony says, you've probably got 12 months at least.

The letters are there at the moment because when you look at the front gate from the esplanade, it looks like a postcard from California, with the lettering across the middle, the Golden Gate bridge, the painted backdrop etc - I thought it looked okay. But as they are moving DCA from a vision of modern California (with references to its history) into the 1920's California Walt first saw, the current postcard entry had to go.

Although I'm excited by the whole DCA makeover, I'm wondering how they are going to address the symetry of the esplanade? At the moment, there is equal distance between the centre star in the esplanade and the two park entrances, I wonder if they are going to lift all those pavers up and re-arrange them? I hope they don't move my paver...!!! (See Google Earth to see what I mean)

I really wanted to have a photo taken sitting in the "L" !

I haven't read much about what the refurb is going to be like though.

Poor Lisa - one of my prized layouts is a huge fold out -48" * 12" of my sister sitting in each of the letters.

I haven't taken much notice of the changes that are planned for DCA but now I'm wondering what they have in mind.

Can someone point me in the right direction to see some sketches of what the new entrance is going to look like? or for that matter what they plan to do with the rest of the park?

Hey Lisa - there is not much in the way of high resolution imagery released by Disney yet - however, they did show a lot of great artwork and models to ABC TV in the US, which has since been screen captured and put on the web.

I think we'll be seeing a lot more once the DCA Preview Center opens this year.

In the meantime, our friends over at Micechat have got a nice thread running with links to various bits of art etc - it is a great place to start looking!

Lots of stuff to check out there, I've had a bit of a look since I got home from work and its all very interesting.

Not real sure about the Cars Land yet. Sounds a lot like the country town where I grew up. lets hope a sprinkling of Disney magic will give it a little something extra.
