Historic DL Map

Postby ajp » Thu Feb 19, 2009 2:16 pm

We were at my in-laws last weekend, and they dragged out an old map from their cupboard while they were cleaning. They were going to toss it and asked if we'd like it, and as soon as I saw it I grabbed it. My father-in-law has been back and forth from the US since 1959 working with QANTAS and visited DL for the first time in 1959.

What they had was a map of Disneyland that was issued in 1958. It is huge at approx 5ft by 3ft. It's not like the maps we get now, the little fold out ones, it's like something you would buy as a souvenier. We intend to have it mounted on a board and framed properly. The fold lines are very pronounced, and there is an odd small tear along those lines, but asied from that it's in fantastic condition. It's incredible to look at it and see how much things have changed, even since 1958, because things even changed from 55 till then as well. It was a great find, and one I'll be holding onto for quite some time.

Anthony - check out http://www.mousemaps.com - this is the site I PM'd you about - you should be able to identify the map from there! Click the first map on the page and it will open up the details for all the 1958 maps that were produced.

Thats for the link Keith, it's an extremely good reference. As it turns out we have a 1958 B version.

Lucky Boy.... I had to pay for mine on ebay. :?

I remember Keith giving me that link when I was trying to ascertain a date for mine as well... brilliant site.
Mine is one of the 1960's editions ( can't remember off hand what year) I'm having it framed as well... its going on my living room wall when its finished... I'm having other memorabilia put into the frame too... ( a friend of mine does framing here on the coast so I'm just waiting for the right stuff to put in it before it gets finished).

You are fortunate indeed to come by such a treasure like you did. Quite a buzz huh? they're really beautiful. When I won mine on eBay I was astounded by what I'd bought... I thought it'd be like the fold out ones like they have now. I was also lucky enough to have a great seller who threw in a huge stack of other memorabilia from the same era cos he knew I was a huge fan... eg: orginal flyers for the house of monsanto (or whatever it was) and slides, postcards and other booklets... all in an original paper Disneyland bag.

It's amazing what people give you when they know your interest. Only last week, a woman at work gave me a Mickey Mouse desktop ornament (you know the kind you stick a photo in - I think) that a friend had given her from Disneyland some years ago. She was cleaning out her cupboards and thought of me and know he sits perfectly on my desk at work.

A 1958B! The rarest of the entire breed - what an amazing find! I looked on eBay last night and a poor copy just sold for $550 USD.

What a great collectible!

Thanks Sandie. I do really take that as a compliment.

Wow Keith, that's impressive numbers. I found a 1961 (I think it was 61) on there for about $350 US. But as mentioned already, it's not for sale. I do intend to mount it and hang it on the wall.
Lucky Boy.... I had to pay for mine on ebay.
Before last Saturday, I didn't know of their existance, which probably isn't something I should be admitting here. I'm not sure I'd pay for one, however, when I opened this one, I couldn't leave it for quite a while just looking at the detail and history that was in it.

If I remember (or am brave enough) I'll bring it in to the next meeting.

Hehe - I was thinking of typing the same thing, but you beat me to it Beth!

But seriously Anthony - it is a great story - you'll have to get out the front and tell everyone about it.
