Eight Below

Postby mushu mama » Sun May 07, 2006 8:58 pm

I escaped to the movies tonight and saw Disney's "Eight Below" set in Antarctica. Gorgeous scenery, cute dogs and the obligitory happy(-ish) ending. Tears were shed, chico babies consumed and all was right with the world.

But the best part was the trailer for "Cars" . Only one month and two days to go. Can't wait.

Has anyone else seen 'Eight Below'? What did you think of it?

- Lisa. :)

Not yet, but I have read some great reviews of it and would love to see it.

Della and I see most Disney movies at the cinema, but when we saw the trailer for this, Della turned to me and said something like "this one's going to make me cry isn't it?"

Now you have to understand that nearly all movies make Della cry, so I didn't see what the difference would be with this one. However she most definitely hates movies that put dogs in peril! She loves dogs...!!! And any movie where a dog may be hurt (or God forbid, snuff it) is usually off limits.

So, without giving any spoilers away - can I take Della to see this?

Ummm, how can I put this gently - probably not a good idea.

There will definitely be sad tears in the middle but the tears at the end will be good ones. Does that help?

I didn't go to the movies to see it specifically, but was pleased it was showing 5 mins from my arrival.

Turned out to be great.

Ahhh...okay, thanks again Lisa! I get the picture.

I'll see if I can get her to go, otherwise I'll just have to wait for the DVD :)

I'm afraid I'm just a sook.

"Surface fed emotions are the relm of the creative streak"

Can't remember where I read this but it probably explains my propensity to cry in movies.....

Haha - got ya there Greg (you asked for that!)

So, which was the last movie in which you cried Greg?

For me, I think it was the Starsky and Hutch remake, when they drove their red Ford Gran Torino V8 off the pier and into the harbour...sniff...snifff...that beautiful car...sniff...:D

The only one that I have actually teared up in was Mr Holland's Opus with Richard Dryfuss. If you haven't seen it and can get through it unmoved I'll be very surprised.

Lately the moment that really moves me is towards the end of The Return of the King when everyone goes down on their knees to the Hobbits on the top of Minas Tirith. It really condenses the importance of all the struggles they've gone through.

Funny story. Many years ago I went to a movie with an ex, it was the one with Michael Keaton and Nicole Kidman where he's dying and makes a movie to show to his unborn kid. We had gone in early (I like to watch the previews) but after the lights went down this guy snuck in and sat a few rows in front of us on his own. We recognised him as a security guard from work (the Casino) but didn't say anything. All the way through the movie he bawled his eyes out and when it was over he snuck out again before the lights came up. We always had a hard time at work after that whenever we saw him being tough and menacing.
