the trailer is to be released next week apparently.
Now those words have me excited - I've been following the development of this film for so long yet they have been very miserly in relation to releasing images, footage and artwork for this film.

I can't wait to see a proper trailer.

And here's the link to the Walt Disney Animation Studios website for Tangled http://www.disneyanimation.com/projects ... index.html

Is it just me, or does this trailer scream "Dreamworks" rather than Disney?

Screams from the rooftops. Animation quality looks outstanding, but yeah, it looks like it will be aimed squarely at the tweens and noone else.

ok.. this is my take on the trailer.

disappointing.

When there was so much promise in this project at the beginning, it floored me to see a 'kids afternoon tv' type of cartoon with the jerky fast movements geared for the short attention spanned amongst us, and Anime-esque facial expressions, rather than the art inspired classic done with the finesse that Disney is capable of.

Very disappointed... on the strength of the trailer, I'll likely be waiting to see this on DVD. :(

Yes - that trailer is really disappointing. I hate the contemporary music track overlaying the scenes as well.

However - I'm still holding out some hope for this movie. This trailer is definitely aiming at the young boy market - the same market that Disney believed completely ignored The Princess and the Frog - and the reason Disney believes that movie did poorly at the cinemas. We've already talked about how they've changed the title from Rapunzel to Tangled to prevent scaring the boys away. So I believe this trailer has been deliberately made 'edgy' and contemporary to attract that market. You hardly even see Rapunzel in this trailer - it is all about Flynn.

From what I've read on the web, it is a more traditional Disney film than the trailer would suggest, with proper songs etc. So I guess we just have to go with the flow and see how the rest of the marketing goes between now and December. Still, at this stage I cannot hide my disappointment. I guess that Disney is a business and they want a good return on their investment - and they've looked at the formula that attracts mixed audiences and big box-office returns for Dreamworks and have tried to emulate that success, whereas in the past, all the other companies tried to emulate Disney's success.

I'm lead to believe that the new (and final) trailer for Tangled is to be released in the next 24 hours. Hopefully I'll be able to download it and show it at the meeting this Saturday night.

In other Tangled news - Disney took the unusual step of showing the incomplete film to the media last week (it was missing the score and some of the lighting/shading was incomplete). This was a bit of a risk because if the press said it was rubbish - any chance of a good box office would have been ruined. Of course - the reviews weren't rubbish - quite the opposite in fact! To give you an idea, have a read of this article from Deadline Hollywood:
http://www.deadline.com/2010/09/oscars- ... t-tangled/

They actually think it to be a strong contender for Best Animated Picture (could it possibly beat Toy Story 3? I don't think so...). From some other reports I've heard from this screening, we shouldn't be fooled by the "hip" trailer they released a few months ago - that really was to entice the young male audience. This movie is a traditional Disney princess movie along the lines of Beauty and the Beast etc.

Hopefully, tomorrow's trailer will give a much better insight into what Tangled is really about.

Oh - and as a final post-script to Disney changing the movie name from Rapunzel - nearly all European and Asian markets (including English speaking Singapore) have kept the original title - what a shame they went for "Tangled" here :(

yep, saw a new one today and I am loathe to do so, but I take a lot of my earlier criticism of the changes back... It looks REALLY good. The animation looks beautiful and really a lot closer to the rococco feel that they first bandied about than I thought it would end up... like its in soft focus.

My faith in this movie has ( partially) been restored. I am quite genuinely surprised that I am looking forward to this one now.

Me too! The trailer is still trying to be a little edgy, but I think underneath it all is a good movie - and the film itself doesn't feature a rock soundtrack, that is a feature of the trailer only - it is traditionally scored with new songs (that are conspicuous by their absence in the trailers - can't have little boys thinking that this is a girl-film!)

For those who haven't seen it - there are two versions of the new trailer:
http://blog.moviefone.com/2010/09/15/ta ... er-disney/ - this is the new US trailer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycoY201RTRo - this is the new international trailer.

They are quite different - so make sure you watch them both!

Some more previews for Tangled have been shown to the US press and again they are stating that Disney have a real winner on their hand with this movie and that it is nothing like what the trailers are trying to depict.

Over at the Blue Sky Disney blog, the owner of the site has a very interesting take on the Disney marketing machine in relation to this movie - it basically supports what we've been saying - give it a read here:

The box office numbers are coming in for Tangled and it has done amazingly well over the weekend in the US.

In the 5-day thanksgiving long weekend period, it pulled US$69,000,000 domestically.

Over the three-day Friday-Sunday period (the general comparison measure), it earned US$49.1 million - compared to Harry Potter 7 which pulled US$50.3 million (but no one expected it to get any where near Harry this weekend.)

Unfortunately this means the marketing suits were probably correct in changing the name to Tangled and making it look like a Dreamworks movie in the trailers :) In comparison, the general release opening three-day weekend for the much-hyped Princess and the Frog last year was only US$24 million (and it only earned US$104.4 million domestically for its entire run - which Tangled should surpass in just a few days).

So it looks like Disney have an animated winner on their hands with Tangled - I can't wait to see it when it hits the cinema here.
