Disney Bluray Update

Postby KeithS » Tue Apr 25, 2006 11:08 am

Okay - just checking in with some Disney DVD releases dates for you.

The Chronicles of Narnia, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was released this week in both single and two disc editions.

Chicken Little comes out on May 10.

On July 5th, the following will be released (this is a big release day!):
Lady and the Tramp (2-disc special edition - part of the Platinum range, only four months after the rest of the world, but what the hey!)
Lady and the Tramp 2 - Scamp's Adventure
Bambi 2
Disney Princess Stories - Volume 3
Cool Runnings / Snow Dogs (Double Pack)
Princess Diaries 1 & 2 (Double Pack)
Rescuers and Rescuers Down Under (Double Pack)
Treasure Planet and Atlantis (Double Pack)
Great Muppet Caper / Muppet Christmas Carol (Double Pack)
Muppet Treasure Island / Muppet Movie (Double Pack)
plus some other Disney TV DVD entries.

Disney also submitted the DVD of the CG animated movie "Valiant" to the Office of Film and Literature Classification on the 21st April - it was awarded a G rating, so expect a release announcement for this DVD soon.

Update: Valiant has now been given a June 8 DVD release date. Of course, this is not a strictly Disney movie - it was distributed in the US under the Disney label, but in Australia, it was distributed by Roadshow (although I did see one cinema poster that retained the Disney title). But here is a funny thing, the Australian Government's OFLC website names Walt Disney Pictures as the production company (which is strange as it was produced by Vanguard Animation in the UK) And to top things off, the advertising for this movie claims "From the Producers of Shrek and Shrek 2" - which of course was Dreamworks feature animation (although in all fairness, the guy who coughed up the money for Shrek then went on to startup Vanguard in the UK). Talk about a confusing genealogy! Makes my family tree look simple.

Most of the July 5th releases mentioned in the note above were available in store today.

Lady and the Tramp 2 disc Special Edition was selling for $32.98 at JB Hi Fi - a bit steep, so I'll wait a fortnight (it will probably be somewhere around $19 - $25 fairly quickly)

Okay, here is a small update of Region 4 DVD releases.

25 October
Cars - this appears to be a single disc release unlike other recent Pixar movies. I hope they don't intend to release a two-disc version in 6-months because that STINKS!

Lost Seasons 1 & 2 - 15 Disc Boxed Set

Desperate Housewives 1 & 2 - 13 Disc Boxed Set

15 November
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - 2 Disc Edition (This includes sections on updating the ride in Disneyland and the world premier at Disney back in July)

15 November
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - 2 Disc Edition
Is it just me or is the gap between cinema and DVD getting smaller and smaller?

Definitely shorter and shorter - I think people downloading movies off the Internet has forced studios to tighten their release windows.

I notice that Australian TV is beginning to reduce the window between series debuts in the US and screening times here. Look at Jericho on Channel 10 - it is a brand new series and is airing here simultaneously with the US release. Now if only other channels would do the same thing (are you listening Channel 7? Show Lost and Desperate Housewives now and we won't have to download it!)

Robert Iger was of the opinion that the gap short get shorter still.

Indeed, Pirates was available on iTunes for weeks before the DVD came out.

On DVDBits, I remember posting a story a while ago that essentially had Iger advocating the simultaneous release of cinema and DVD, perhaps making DVDs available in the lobby exclusively for a time, so that cinema owners wouldn't have their profits eaten into as much.

And still the studios try to blame piracy for lower cinema takings!

Just to update:

And another small update:

February 7, 2007
The Wild
Kim Possible - Monkey Business

That is a serious time delay for The Wild - given its poor reviews and cinema takings, I'd have thought they would have dumped this on the market for Christmas to recoup some money. The DVD was classified "G" on the 24th October, so it looked like a Christmas release. I guess the folks at BVHE didn't want it to interfere with their POTC-2 DVD release.

Did anyone see The Wild in the cinema? We missed it as it came out when we were on holiday, and had disappeared by the time we got back! I don't see any reviews or comments about it here.

Yep. I saw it in the cinema. I liked it more than Madagascar, even though there were lots of similarities.
Loved the covert agents and the dung beetles the best. And Nigel was hilarious despite his pommy accent.
I think I was the only one in the world that hadn't heard about it or the controversy surrounding its story line before I saw it. Perhaps that made it all the more enjoyable.

And you're counting down till you're next trip already?

Hehe - no it is a fake countdown. I hope it doesn't turn out to be 704 days! That is way too many :)

Thanks for The Wild update - I'll have to wait for the DVD. I didn't mind the trailer and I never saw Madagascar.

I knew of the similarities between the two - the weird thing is that it is Disney's fault - they had been sitting on The Wild for years - they just couldn't seem to get the movie finished, and by then, Dreamworks (who also knew about The Wild for many years) just got on with the job and beat Disney to the marketplace.

Which made it look like Disney copied Dreamworks, when it was the other way around - oh well, live and learn...

Another DVD release for you:

The Aristocats 2-Disc special edition will be released in Australia on June 6.

Also, in the previous message I mentioned that Wave 2 of Walt Disney Treasures will be released on July 4. I now have it on good authority that they will also re-release Wave 1 on that date, so if you didn't get them the first time, here comes your chance :)

Walt Disney Treasures - The Chronological Donald: Vol. 2 - 194...
Walt Disney Treasures - The Complete Pluto: Vol. 1 - 1930-1947
I stumbled across this Treasures collection in Kmart on Saturday
There was "Silly Symphonies"
"The Chronological Donald"
" Mickey in Living Colour "
"Mickey in Living Colour 2"

Are they the first series or the second?

I didn't have any of these so naturally I needed them all..... :D

No tins like the one historical Disneyland that I bought a few years ago, but they were still packaged nicely.

They were selling for $25.99.
