Star Wars Han Solo Movie

Postby KeithS » Sat Jun 24, 2017 9:55 am

Seems like they are having some trouble with this production.  They've dropped the original two directors as they were making it too much of a comedy and drifting it away from a traditional Star Wars film.  Personally, I'm not against that move - Han Solo had great lines throughout his Star Wars career, but we wasn't a comic.  He was cynical and sarcastic which made him funny, but he wasn't funny for funny's sake if you know what I mean.

That said, they've announced Ron Howard is taking over directorship which will be interesting too.  I wonder if they've now gone too far the other way from their vision.  We'll have to wait and see next year!

I sort of imagined it as having an Indiana Jones feel rather than the darker Rogue One feel especially given the Harrison Ford connection. Han Solo doesn't need to connect into the current story but could be a series of individual adventures that are just good fun.

yep, when they sacked the directors I was thinking it was kinda like Rogue Two... ( didn't they do that part way through Rogue One?)   Will be interesting to see where they take it, I think they need to keep him as cynical as he was for continuity ( even if it is backwards) because if he's all of a sudden a comic he'd be harder to gel with as a character that we already know sees the world from a darker place.

I'm really looking forward to this. I'll be going in with low expectations of course. I did enjoy the trailers.

I've avoided all of the trailers (so far) because I would rather go into it with lower expectations and no preconceived ideas. I tend to enjoy movies better that way, even the ones I would otherwise consider as average. Of course, that being said, I am looking forward to it as well.

I've enjoyed the trailers too and I'm looking forward to seeing this.  I like the casting so far and the early (and clean) version of the Falcon looks cool!

There must be so much pressure on this production to get the details right. There are a lot of rabid Star Wars fans who will jump on little faults in the canon.

Went and saw this on Friday night and will wait until others to see, but I liked it. It wasn’t absolutely awesome but i enjoyed it and liked what they did with the back story. They build his character well and develop his personality and untrustworthy nature.
2023 Disneyland, Walt Disney World, Disney Cruise Lines - Disney Wish. Going to be awesome to be back!

I haven't seen it yet, but am looking forward to it.

It hasn't exactly set the box office alight though so I wonder if Disney are concerned about having made too many Star Wars movies too quickly?

I really enjoyed it as well. A few plot holes but a great ride.

It had really soft numbers this weekend too - both in the US and globally...I saw there was even talk of Kathleen Kennedy (head of Lucasfilm) being asked to resign - it is all very strange... I thought this movie would have been huge but now is unlikely to break even! Unheard of for a Star Wars film...

The last few Star Wars movies have all suffered from bad press. Solo certainly had it's share.

I re-watched The Last Jedi a couple of nights ago and have a number of issues with it. Solo probably suffers from a bit of backlash from fans over Last Jedi which is a shame because I think it's a much better movie.

I really enjoyed the movie when I saw it last weekend. It is interesting everyone who has actually seen the movie seems to have enjoyed it. It was all the bad press on changes to Producers etc that has stopped people going out to see it. It reminds me of John Carter movie a few years ago that had bad press but when I send to see it in a cinema in Melboure people were walking out saying that was good.

It seems that places like rotten tomatoes have an extraordinary ability to dictate the success or failure of a movie. I can sort of understand it when the price of a visit to the movies is so much in Australia that you ant to do the research and make sure you are going to get your moneys worth.

When they say that a movie like this is a failure I wonder how much they are taking things like merchandise, home video (or streaming) etc into account.

Yes - I agree with Greg.  It isn't just about box office, but Lego toys, DVD sales, t-shirts etc that goes with it.  I'm sure Disney aren't making a loss...they are just making less of a profit.
