Planes was originally to be a straight to video release set in the same universe as Cars, but now it is heading for a limited theatrical release - similar to what Disney have done with the Fairies series. Consider Planes as Disney's male counterpart to the Fairies movie.

Anyhow, it is set for release in Australia on 19 September.

Here is the first trailer:

And the new trailer released today is here:

It looks awfully like a remake of Cars but in the air!

I like that they're expanding on the cars universe. The concept of bringing transportation to life works on a few levels. This looks like its going to be a good story with great animation and some Ok one liners.

Gee I dunno about this one...

I can't help thinking that a different story line could have been developed given that planes are able to go anywhere and have so many other 'jobs' than racing. Think it'll be a 'blue ray' watch for us.

A little too cars-like for me too.

Ican see where you're both coming from, but Disney is investing heavily in the Cars franchise with DCA and soon DHS, so I can see why they would want to keep the cars imagery alive and kicking. The fear is positive or otherwise, that we will see Planes be integrated into the area in DCA whe Soarin is

I like the Planes concept - but as Lisa said, they could have come up with anything other than racing...

The little crop duster could have dreamed about being any other plane, a big passenger plane, a rescue ambulance plane, a fighter jet, a fire fighting plane - anything like that, yet he wants to be a racing plane? Anyway - I'm sure it'll be successful (I love planes in general - so I imagine their target audience will love this) - and there would be plenty of scope for sequels.

I'll probably only get it on Bluray though - I won't see the limited release at cinemas.
