Disney Movie Blockbusters

Postby KeithS » Tue Mar 23, 2010 11:39 am

At the meeting on Saturday night, there was a disputed trivia question about the highest grossing movie in Disney history. The trivia answer was given as "The Lion King" as is quoted in the official website:
http://disney.go.com/vault/archives/mov ... nking.html

Although I suspect that website has not been updated in a number of years.

So out of interest, I thought I'd have a look at Disney grosses, as well as having a look at ticket prices adjusted for inflation - the latter of which came up with some surprises!

So here we go - the top 15 Disney movies by Box Office grosses worldwide. The "Rank" is their overall rank in movie history (Avatar being number 1). The dollar amount is their actual ticket takings in millions, and the year is the release date.

Rank
4 Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest $1,066.20 2006
7 Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End$961.00 2007
19 Finding Nemo $864.60 2003
28 The Lion King $783.80 1994
33 The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe $745.00 2005
35 Up $723.00 2009
39 The Sixth Sense $672.80 1999
41 Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl $654.30 2003
44 The Incredibles $631.40 2004
46 Ratatouille $623.70 2007
58 Alice in Wonderland (2010) $565.40 2010
59 Armageddon $553.70 1998
66 Monsters, Inc. $525.40 2001
67 WALL-E $521.30 2008
71 Aladdin $504.10 1992

The problem with the above list is that inflation has an adverse effect on this ranking as ticket prices are much more expensive now. So let us take inflation out of the equation and have a look at Disney's Top 15 of all time (based on US Domestic Grosses only).

Rank
10 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs $829,490,000 1937
11 101 Dalmatians $760,370,300 1961
21 Fantasia $631,960,900 1941
24 Mary Poppins $594,963,600 1964
25 The Lion King $587,733,900 1994
29 The Jungle Book $560,704,100 1967
30 Sleeping Beauty $553,064,800 1959
38 Pinocchio $512,939,400 1940
45 Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest $491,821,900 2006
47 Bambi $484,851,700 1942
61 The Sixth Sense $438,177,200 1999
65 Finding Nemo $428,728,200 2003
68 Lady and the Tramp $424,142,500 1955
81 Swiss Family Robinson $409,478,900 1960
87 Aladdin $399,086,300 1992

Note that these figures include price-adjusted re-releases as well. The dollar figures relate to a ticket price of $7.61.

So, who would have thought that 101 Dalmatians would be the second most watched Disney movie of all time in the US? And Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End didn't even make the list (it ranks 114th all time price adjusted.)

Figures come courtesy of Box Office Mojo. http://boxofficemojo.com/

I stand corrected and offer my sincere apology (but I suspect Manuel would have won anyway)

No need to apologise - the website was wrong (and yes, Manuel always wins...!). I just found these figures were interesting as the adjusted movie list was not what I expected. I thought Snow White would be first because of all the re-releases, but some of the others were from left field. Who'd have thought that Swiss Family Robinson would have one of the highest ticket sales in Disney history?

Aha! We got an extra point then! Woohoo! I only knew that Pirates DMC was #1 because I heard the list of highest grossing films when Avatar was breaking all the records. No need to apologise though, since I believe it would only have lifted our team up from 'Embarrassing last' to 'Dead last'

101 Dalmations is a surprise in that list - among others. It is the animated version isn't it? I've never been a great fan of that style of animation.
