Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Mans Chest

Postby mushu mama » Wed Jun 21, 2006 8:26 pm

Stumbled across this concept art for the new additions to the POTC ride (see Disney news from the home page) on another forum.

If you want to take a look its at:

http://www.disneyworldtrivia.com/forums ... php?t=7034

Could all be different to this but interesting just the same.

(and was very envious of their Pirate smiley faces they have!)

Aye me hearties - that thar looks like me old mate Cap'n Jack and 'is nemesis Davy Jones...

Okay - enough pirate talk :) The artwork looks cool - I don't mind them updating and modernising rides over time, but I'm sure some purists will hate this!

I liked the concept art. I love the original ride but adding Capn' Jack to anything is a bonus in my book!

Hello Everyone - just in case you were not aware, there is a live webcast of the premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest beginning at 12pm this afternoon (Sydney time) on MSN.

The link is : http://movies.msn.com/movies/pirates_webcast

So if you like red carpet stuff, plus a few other surprises, be sure to join in. Of note, Jason Surrell (who will be our special guest at next week's Pirates meeting via phone hookup from Orlando) will be co-hosting this webcast. Jason is the author of the definitive book on Pirates of the Caribbean.

I'll provide an run down on the show later on.

Okay, the webcast is over and it will be available for download later in the week. I'll provide the link once it is available.

The cast interviews were pretty bland and boring, but the presentation by Jason Surrell and Tim O'day was informative. I'm looking forward more than ever to talking with Jason next week at our meeting.

Here is a rundown on the more interesting things they talked about:

Tim and Jason spoke of the new technology for the Jack Sparrow animatronics in the POTC updated ride - they showed amazing video of Jack in a rocking chair and in a barrel, and some really funny vision of Johnny Depp having a close look at his alter-ego.

They then showed the imagineers programming Capt Barbarossa for his appearance in the ride. Jason said he had the opportunity to watch them programming the Captain's actions and watching how they put it together.

They showed the behind the scenes of how they put the movie premier together - how they built the giant screen and installed the World's longest red carpet - 2500 feet from Main street to New Orleans square via Tomorrowland.

Bob Iger was on red carpet. Bob talked about how great the movie is - about the Jack Sparrow character and how Bob thought that it was necessary to include him into the ride. He said the new scenes honour the old ride and will please the purists.

Lead Imagineer on the new POTC Cathy Rogers, appeared with Jason and explained some of the new special effects changes including the brand new sound sytem with 200 high defintion speakers - new lighting - new fog - new enhanced cannon ball effects in the water to make you feel like you are in the battle. Cathy also talked about how Johnny Depp gave input into the animation and scenes. Cathy was also a lead on Expedition Everest.

Jason talks about how POTC is in all the Magic Kingdoms except Hong Kong and says that we shouldn't be surprised to see it there soon...!

Thousands of new gold coins were added to the attraction, as well as hundreds of props such as old books etc have been added to improve the look and feel. Jason mentions how the imagineers go around to second hand markets etc to pick up props...They even managed to get the chest from the first movie as a prop in the Disneyland attraction.

You can now try the Dead Man's Tale online game at MSN.com - here is the link: http://www.deadmanstale.com/ (requires the new Windows Live Messenger application installed.)

Jason talked of how WDW nearly didn't get POTC because they thought WDW was too close to the Caribbean and New Orleans. Marc Davis wanted a western version instead but an outcry from visitors forced Disney to build POTC in Florida.

The Blue Bayou restaurant makes a cameo appearance in the new movie - including the fireflies!

Anyway - that covers a lot of the interest stuff. The movie and the ride updates look fantastic. The movie opens in Australia on the 6th July. The new attraction opens in Disneyland this Monday and in Orlando on July 7 - looking forward to riding it! :D Catch you all later.

Great update Keith! I'm impressed Jason will be joining us via phone this saturday. I love his Pirates book (Haunted Mansion is on its way from Amazon and can't wait for the Mountains book). I'm hoping Disney Editions will eventually do a book like this for almost every attraction - I'm sure there's a market out there...

Looking through my library, I have another Pirates book/magazine from late 70's/early 80's about the Disneyland and WDW attraction called Walt Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean. I'll bring that along on Saturday.

deadsmantale.com is interesting. Sort of taking product placement (of Windows Messenger Live) to a whole new level! A bit long but still some interesting technology.

Me too - and Saturday night will be great - we will be dialling into Jason around 9:00pm (7:00am in Orlando)

Be sure to put some questions together for him - you might want to ask how the new book is coming along! He came across as a genuinely nice bloke - I'm sure he'll be happy to answer whatever we put to him.

Nice one Mike! =D> I'd love a copy.

With reference to Jason Surrell again, I notice that he is going to be in New York on July 6-7 hosting a "Pirates in the Big Apple" night at the World of Disney Store. Entry to that event is $120USD each ticket - and you get some hors'derves - but by being at the Down Under Disneyana meeting on Saturday - you'll get direct access to the same person for just a $10 cover charge and that includes all the pizza and salad you can eat! And lucky door prizes and raffles etc :)

No worries - I'll email a copy to you tomorrow.

I'm most impressed Jason will be joining us via phone. How did you arrange that? Can't wait to chat with Bob Iger for our next meeting :-)
