Day 11 – 29 March 2017. Tokyo
Today was Keith’s mystery tour of Tokyo.  Back in 2008 when Della and I went there for the first time, Julie and Barry from the club took us on a subway tour of Tokyo and taught us how to get around and find fun places.  We decided to pass this on to our American friends who previously had been nervous of coming to Asia.

Again, the weather was looking good and although we had a slow start to the day, we hit the road about 10am and firstly headed to Shibuya.  The Shibuya crossing is one of those places you always see on TV commercials of busy streets with thousands of people. It is an amazing pedestrian crossing outside of busy Shibuya station – sort of like New York’s Times Square with big screens, noise, shops, cars, trains and people.  It is a must place to visit whenever you are in Tokyo – just for the atmosphere alone.  While we were there, we paid a visit to Hachiko, the statue of the Akita dog still awaiting his master.  Just around the corner from the crossing is the Tokyo flagship Disney Store which is three stories and a fun place to visit too, so we headed up there – not that we needed any more Disney stuff!

After Shibuya, we caught the train across town to Asakusa.  We were there just a few days ago on the bus tour, but as we only had 30 minutes, it wasn’t long enough to do any serious shopping. Brian and Patti wanted to go back there so we did.  We spent a couple of hours in the market street buying souvenirs which was a lot of fun. It wasn’t quite as busy as Saturday, but still much busier than the day we went back in 2008.

After the markets, we caught a train to Akihabera then walked to a coffee shop called N3331. Della and I saw this coffee shop on a TV show before we left Australia.  It is located on an abandoned railway platform. The station was closed in 1946 and forgotten about until three years ago when some decided to open shops underneath and put a coffee shop on the old platform above.  The fun thing is that although the station doesn’t operate, the tracks do and it is a JR main train line, so you have these cool looking trains driving by you every two minutes.  We grabbed some coffees and cakes and sat in the outdoor area which is still glass enclosed. They gave us blankets as well (it is Japan after all) and we had a great time recharging and watching the trains fly by.

After that, we headed back into Akihabera to visit the Yodobashi Akiba – the crazy 10 story electronics department store. We had fun looking through different floors, especially the toy floor on level 6.  There is nothing quite like this store anywhere else on earth.  By the time we got out of there it was getting late so we decided to catch the train back to Maihama.  We headed up to Ikspiari and was able to get a seat for dinner at the TGI Friday restaurant.  I had some of the best pork ribs I’ve ever had – so tasty!  It was the end of a great day.

Day 12 – 30 March 2017. Tokyo Disneysea/Disneyland
Thursday – StellaLou release day.  We got up this morning to fine conditions. Brian and Patti were heading to Disneyland and we were meant to go there too – but the release of StellaLou changed all that.  Fortunately, Tetsuya had given us two free park entry tickets, so we decided to use these to gain access to Disneysea, and that way, we could use our Disneyland pass later in the afternoon to catch up with Brian and Patti.

So after breakfast, we headed across to Bayside monorail station for the trip to Disneysea.  On the way there, I said to Della we should have a competition to see who spots someone with StellaLou first.  As soon as I said that, I saw someone carrying her down the steps at Bayside Station and said “there’s one!”  She is cute and Della said “I haven’t met her yet I love her already!”.  There was no going back after that statement – we had to get one today.

We got through the gates at Disneysea and we knew they would be selling her at the Galleria near the main entrance, also at McDucks in the American Waterfront and Aunt Pegs in Cape Cod.  There was a big queue at the Galleria and McDucks, so we went all the way to Aunt Pegs.  We thought we were in trouble when we arrived there as they had a fastpass return time sign up, but we had no idea where you got the fastpasses for the shop.  The lady said if we had no ticket, to join the standby line which stretched from Aunt Pegs, all the way to Aquatopia!  We followed the line to the end thinking this would take all day, but in the end, it only took about 45 minutes.  They did a very smart thing in that they were only releasing StellaLou and not a bunch of extra merchandise at once.  So you got in the shop, picked your bunny, paid for it and got out.  Much quicker that way!

After getting StellaLou – we took her back to our hotel room and had a quick lunch before heading over to Disneyland.  We got there just in time to meet Brian and Patti and watch the Happiness is Here parade which debuted a while back for the 30th anniversary.  It was a great parade too with a really catchy song.  After the parade, we did some more shopping while they went to ride Pooh using a fastpass.

We caught up with them at the Queen of Hearts again for dinner before going back to our parade spot for the Electrical Parade.  That was the second of two great viewing of that parade so we were happy.  We stayed in the hub but moved to a more central position in front of the castle for the fireworks which were then immediately followed by the Once Upon a Time castle projection show.  Again, these castle shows are great – mixing amazing Disney music, lasers and projections into great shows.

After the show, we let the crowd disperse before heading into Fantasyland and riding on Peter Pan followed by Haunted Mansion. Both rides are paced during the day, but the park empties after the castle show, so you can get on most rides.  After Haunted Mansion, the park closed so we headed out of the gate and caught the monorail back to the hotel.  Tomorrow is a Disneysea day with Brian and Patti – their last chance to see Tokyo’s Fantasmic.

Day 13 – 31 March 2017. Tokyo Disneysea
This was Brian and Patti’s last park day in Tokyo as they return to Orlando tomorrow.  As a result, we decided we’d spend the whole day with them which meant an early start for all of us.  After breakfast we headed to Disneysea and this time, Brian took our park tickets up to grab a FP for Journey.  When he got back to the front of the park where we were, we entered the lottery for Big Band Beat but we lost.  That left us the option of seeing the first session of the day which is lottery governed at 12:20pm so we knew we had to line up for that.

After failing on the lottery, we caught the electric railroad from the American Waterfront to Aquatopia.  Just before we were about to board, Della noticed ShellieMay doing a meet and greet near the Tower of Terror.  Della really wanted to meet her too but by now, we were on the way to Port Discovery.

When we got there, we joined the long queue for Aquatopia – it took us about an hour to get on the ride, but it was one of the shortest queues in the park.  After the ride, we headed back to the American Waterfront because we could get another Fastpass so we decided to get one for Tower of Terror.  We saw ShellieMay was still out so Della and I joined the queue while Brian and Patti lined up for popcorn.

The time was nearing for us to join the Big Band Beat line, but we were still in the Shellie queue – we told the others just to join the line and we’d catch them after the show.  We finally got our photos with Shellie and she was a lot of fun.  We rushed back to Big Band Beat and managed to get a seat for the first performance of the day.  It is still a terrific show although it had been changed a bit since last time.  Mickey on the drums is great.

After the show, our Journey fastpass was due so we raced up there for another ride and while we were there, got a FP for 20,000 leagues.  After Journey, we headed to Cape Cod for lunch – we were hoping to see the Duffy show, but the line was enormous so we just went in the non-show line and got food and the dessert plate specials.

After lunch, we went for a walk though Lost River Delta to take photos before going to Mermaid lagoon to buy some stuff for friends of Brian and Patti.  Our 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea FP was now due so we went on that ride again which is always fun, but when we got off, it was pouring rain.  Not wanting to wander around in the wet too long, we headed to the stores at the front of the park which were packed – everyone else having the same idea.  So after fighting through the scrum for a while, we took refuge in the SS Columbia’s Teddy Roosevelt lounge and coffees and heating up!  We stayed there for about 45 minutes until our Tower of Terror fastpass was due..

We headed to TOT – I still haven’t figured out how the statue disappears, and Brian and Patti had a good laugh seeing Imagineer Joe Roede as Harrison Hightower in all the artwork – as they personally had worked with Joe in the past at Animal Kingdom.  Disappointingly, the shop at the end of the Tower ride had no TOT merchandise – we’ve noticed that the merchandise was more generic now, and this shop highlighted that for us.  It used to be a great shop for Shiriki Untundu merchandise (the statue from the preshow) yet there was nothing at all in the shop related to Tower of Terror…how we long for the days when OLC managed Tokyo merchandising instead of the Disney Store (who now runs it….)

After Tower, we headed over to Zambini brothers restaurant for dinner.  We were getting pushed for time and we got out of there with just five minutes to wait until the beginning of Fantasmic.  That said, we still managed to get a viewing spot that was excellent and we really enjoyed the show.  It was pouring rain, so it was a little uncomfortable (cold and wet), but the show more than made up for it,  The Japanese version still has the same themes as the US version – Mickey’s Imagination – but it was executed completely differently and was a great spectacle.  We stayed after the show to watch the fireworks display before slowly making our way out of the gate and back to the hotel.  For Brian and Patti, their big Asian Disney adventure was at an end, but we still have a few days ahead of us to enjoy.

Day 14 – 01 April 2017. Tokyo Disney Resort Area
Saturday today and we say goodbye to our friends.  We were planning on a slow recovery day today – no parks, no early starts, no late nights.  After breakfast, Della and I went to the art store in the hotel to pick up a figuring we’ve always wanted and missed out on.  It is a Snow White figure that has been retired and was part of a set featuring Ariel, Belle and Cinderella.  We couldn’t believe it was still here so we got it.

We then caught up with Brian and Patti who transferred their bags to our room while they checked out.  We chatted for about 45 minutes before helping them move their luggage downstairs to await the bus to Haneda.  The bus came right on time and soon we were waving them goodbye as they pulled out of the driveway.

Della and I decided we go to Ikspiari for a shopping day at the Disney Store and others.  We headed over there and had lunch and hit the shops – getting presents for family and friends.  We also rolled through Bon Voyage before heading back to the hotel with our loot.  We spent some time texting Jess back home about our loot before heading out to dinner again in Ikspiari food court.  After another run through the Disney Store, we went back to the hotel and caught up on the journal.

Tomorrow we are heading back to Tokyo for another shopping run – this time we’ll visit Harujuku and the Kiddyland toy store!

You are going to have to share some photos of your house and where you manage to put all of the things you have bought. Can't believe everything could possibly be on display.

Another quick question...did you happen to see any tourist sim cards for sale in Shanghai?

Hi Greg - I can't say I noticed tourist sim cards in Shanghai, but I would assume they exist.  I did see some store at the airport when we arrived that appeared to have mobile stuff, so I would be surprised if they weren't selling them.

Day 15 – 02 April 2017. Harujuku and Akihabera
Another fine day this morning with the sun shining and a little warmer outside – all good news for our shopping day in Tokyo.  We had breakfast and as we were eating, Brian and Patti texted us from Orlando that they’d gotten home safely.  Our plan today was to go to Harajuku, then wherever we felt like going.

So after breakfast, we hit the monorail and train to Tokyo Central, where we swapped for the JR Yamanote line to Harujuku.  The train was fun as we were in the front carriage and could look out past the driver to the tracks ahead.  When we arrived at Harajuku, we were in for a shock – the place was packed – more than we’d ever seen it!  Not to worry though, we knew where we were going – Kiddyland toy shop!  Before that though, we had a slight detour to make.  In 2010, Della bought some bags from a shop up near the Meiji shrine, so we went back there today and they were still selling the same bags!  We bought two more as gifts for people before heading back down the trail.

Kiddyland is a five story toy shop that is chock-full of weird Japanese toys and stuff.  The basement floor is called SnoopyTown and is devoted solely to Snoopy and has way-cool stuff!  Della is a Snoopy fan so she loves it.  Every other floor has specialist areas such as Disney, Studio Ghibli, Anime, Keropi, Miffy, Hello Kitty etc.  There are great things to find in every section and we bought some cool items.

After we’d done every floor (and it was a fight because the place was packed!), we then headed to Takeshita Street in Harajuku – the heart of the district and home to many Japanese quirky shops, cat cafes, candy shops, cosplay, and of course, the Disney Store.  The street is narrow and pedestrian only, but you could hardly move, it was great fun!  We finally got to the Disney Store for a quick look and we purchased a few more Tsum Tsums that we hadn’t seen anywhere else.  We then decided to go back to the station and head to Akihabera again.

The station entrance at Harajuku was a nightmare – it was completely choked with people either coming in, or leaving, and although they had police and guards directing crowds, it was a gridlock for a while.  Eventually though we got on the platform and took the train directly to Akihabera. When we got there, we grabbed a bite for lunch (it was 3pm!) and some iced chocolates, before going back to Yodobashi Akiba.  This time we headed straight to the 6th floor where the toys etc are.  We had a good look through there tonight – there is just so much to see.  We ended up just buying a Rapunzel jigsaw puzzle which looked really nice.  By the time we got out of there, it was almost 6pm, so we decided to head back to the resort for dinner.

When we got to Ikspiari, we went to the Hawaiian hamburger place again, before another walk around of the Disney Store.  We then decided to have an earlier night – getting back to the hotel by about 7:30pm.  Tomorrow we are back at Disneysea for the first day of their Easter celebration!

Hi Dean - the cost of the taxi was about 100RMB.  On the way back, it was under 140RMB (including the freeway tolls which our first taxi avoided by going backstreets!!)

If you budget 150 each way, you'll be safe.

Day 16 – 03 April 2017. Tokyo Disneysea
Today we awoke to a cloudless blue sky and a view across the parks to the horizon – yay! We headed down to breakfast knowing that it was the first day of Tokyo Disney Resort’s Easter.  After breakfast, we decided to have a quick look in the hotel Disney shop and behold – the Easter merchandise had arrived!!!  Lots of new goodies, but instead of buying, we just legged it back to our room to prepare for Disneysea day!

We caught the monorail to the park and headed to the front shop – it was crazy!! I’ve never seen piranhas skeletonise a cow – but I’m guessing this is pretty much what it would look like…thousands of people (including Della) stripping shelves bare of new merchandise. It was fun and a little scary!  Della managed to get a few items she wanted and then outside the big Easter show called “Fashionable Easter” commenced. If anyone has seen Primavera at Disneysea, then you know what to expect – a BIG show all around the Mediterranean Harbour with hundreds of dancers and characters on barges.  It was a great show.

When it finished, we headed over to Cape Cod to buy a StellaLou for Julie around 11:30am.  When we got there, Della asked me to wait in the queue for the My Friend Duffy show while she went to get the Stella.  She was back after 40 minutes and I had only moved a little bit.  In the end, it took 2 and a half hours to get seated for the show – that is the longest I’ve ever waited for anything. We ate our lunch, watched the show, and got out of there at 3:15pm.

After that, we headed to the American Waterfront as StellaLou was making her live debut.  She drove past in a car and it was crazy with fan-girls going mental – you’d think it was Justin Bieber… After she went by, we headed to Mediterranean Harbour again to watch the Easter show from a better vantage point, however it was cancelled because a storm was brewing – that was a shame because we missed the 2pm one due to the Duffy line so we can’t see the show again.

Next, we lined up at Madame Biscotte’s for some Easter egg shaped candy boxes in the patterns of Minnie and Daisy.  They are like miniature popcorn buckets for candy.  We got both special types before heading through Mysterious Island and into Mermaid Lagoon.  We visited the lagoon shop before going to Arabian Coast and then Lost River Delta.  We then walked through Port Discovery and down to Cape Cod again.  That’s when we started noticing lightening in the distance.  We planned on having dinner at Vulcania again tonight and as we crossed the bridge towards Mysterious Island, a massive storm hit.  Lightning, thunder and people all around screaming – it was awesome.  We got to Vulcania and it just started pouring down.  We still had to queue outside to gain admission, but we had some shelter.  It didn’t take too long to get inside and we stopped to have our dinner.

We were worried that the storm would cancel Fantasmic like the afternoon Easter show, but when we got out of the restaurant, the sky was completely clear and the moon and stars were visible.  We headed to our viewing spot for Fantasmic and had a great time watching it, and the fireworks straight after.  With that over, we decided to call it a night and head out of the park.  We got a ton of merchandise today, so tonight we have to commence packing.  Tomorrow we have a half day in the park before heading to the airport and home.
