Day 3 - 25 March 2014 - Hong Kong Disneyland
We both had a good sleep last night after yesterday’s big day and we were up at 7am for another crack at the park. We had breakfast again at the Hollywood Hotel before doing some pin shopping in our hotel and then making our way over to Disneyland after opening. Our plan was to hit some of those rides that have long lines all day, but as soon as we got in the park, Della saw Duffy in Town Square and made a beeline for him. We lined up for photos with him, before heading back into the park.

We headed through the Castle and grabbed a Fastpass for Pooh (which we forgot about and never used) before moving to Toy Story Land. In there, we rode Slinkydog Spin before stopping to try out the new Mango Dole Whip which was very nice. We then headed over to the new lands, going on Mystic Manor and Grizzly Gulch again. By now, it was nearly lunch time, so we headed over to Main Street and bought some food at the bakery which we ate in Town Square.

We picked up Della’s Duffy photos from the Kodak shop and then Della decided to do some shopping over at Crystal Arts in Main Street. We then headed out on the Jungle Cruise before scampering back to Main Street just in time to see the parade. Again it was a fine and sunny day and we got very hot watching the parade.

After the parade, we went into the Emporium to cool off before heading over to Mickey’s Philharmagic. We took a trip through to Mystic Point to have a look at the new Explorer’s Club restaurant there, but it was closed this evening. We went back to Fantasyland and took a ride on the teacups and then decided to have dinner over at the Starliner Diner in Tomorrowland (Della had a burger, I had the BBQ chicken wings which were great!). We then jumped on the Orbitron before getting our jackets from our locker as the sun had gone down and it was starting to cool.

Finally, we grabbed a spot In front of the castle for the 8pm fireworks and watched them from there – a perfect viewing spot with a good crowd all around us – another perfect but tiring day for us!

Day 4 - 26 March 2014 – Hong Kong (Causeway Bay Shopping)
We started this morning with a character breakfast in the Enchanted Garden restaurant at the Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel. We got a great table for two near the food, so we could get up and down easily. We grabbed our food and ate before the characters came out so that we could have fun with them without interrupting our eating. We had Pluto, Goofy and Mickey come and visit us. Della asked Mickey where Minnie was and it sort of looked like she was off swimming, but maybe our interpretation of mouse-charades was a bit off!

After breakfast, we did a quick walk around the Mickey maze before grabbing our backpack and heading off to the MTR station. Our old Octopus cards were still valid, so we hopped on a train and headed into the City. We went to Causeway Bay as there were a number of shops there that we wanted to look at.

First up was Sogo – the Japanese department store in Hong Kong. We like this shop as it always has weird Japanese stuff (yes, we are in Hong Kong and not Tokyo – the irony is not lost on us!). Anyway, we walked in and as we were going up the escalator, Della yells out – hey what is that? It is a sign for some Disney thing but it went past to quickly for me to read. So we got on another escalator (as any Disney fan would) to go past it again. This time we were able to read that there was some sort of Disney event on at the store at some point in time. At the top of the escalator, there was a what’s on brochure that I picked up – and sure enough, in celebration of the Disney Company’s 90th year, the department store was hosting a special five-day event – beginning today, 26 March! It was being held in the Sogo Ballroom up on the 21st floor of the building!

Of course, before we went upstairs, we checked out the main 8 floors of the department store and bought a few little things including a Disney watch for Della before heading to the lift and going up to the 21st floor. Once we arrived, there was an enormous ballroom that had been set up for the Disney event – with an amazing range of Disney merchandise, most of which I hadn’t seen before. There was a large selection of 90th anniversary merchandise, including fluffies (yes, three came home) and other stuff. There was also a large wall showing the highlights of the nine decades of the Disney company. It was a great find and we spent lots of money.

After Sogo – we headed to McDonalds for food, and then on to do some bargain shopping at places like Swarovski and bookstores and other stuff. Swarovski crystal is much cheaper here in Hong Kong and so we bought a few pieces.

By 5pm, our feets were no longer talking to us, so we caught the MTR back to HKDL. We dumped all our loot in our room then headed downstairs to Walt’s café for dinner – and had one of the most amazing meals ever. Three course: vege soup, sirloin steak and white chocolate cheesecake – all prepared wonderfully. After dinner, the hotel desk manager called up to make sure we were having a good time and that we knew when and where we had to be on the weekend – I’ll reveal more about that later!

Tomorrow, we’ll be back to the park.

Day 5 - 27 March 2014 – Hong Kong Disneyland
Slow start today, mainly because our feet were still aching from the day before! We had our breakfast down at the Hollywood Hotel again before heading over to the park. Today was a lot hotter than the previous days – about 27 and high humidity, so we were sweating by the time we got to the park. Our plan was to do the rides and attractions we hadn’t been on yet.

First up though, we grabbed a locker followed by an iced chocolate from the Main Street Bakery as it was hot. We checked the times board and went and get a fastpass for Winnie the Pooh. We then headed over to Toy Story Land and waited in line for the Parachute Jump. When our turn came to board, the Green Army Men came out and they got on as well, it was very funny to see them on the ride with us.

We then headed over to Mystic Manor, but it was down, so we went to Grizzly Gulch and ran into Chip ‘n’ Dale in their prospectors gear. We got photos with them then watched the music show on the street in Grizzly Gulch which was a lot of fun. As we were already there, we sat down and had the fish and chips again at the Lucky Nugget saloon.

After lunch, we headed back to Fantasyland to use our Pooh Fastpass, and then back to Adventureland to see the 2pm Festival of the Lion King show. We had good seats and really enjoyed it.

After the Lion King, we headed to Main Street and grabbed another iced chocolate from the bakery. We then did a quick walkthrough of the Emporium but escaped from Main Street before the parade commenced. We thought we’d go try Autopia during the parade as the lines may be shorter. The sign said 30 minutes, but we only waited about 20 minutes for our turn. We were able to watch the construction taking place on The Iron Man Experience – there is heaps happening and they put up new construction walls in Tomorrowland yesterday for it.

After Autopia, we headed up to It’s a Small World as it was its 50th Anniversary today. We got on a good boat – all adults and no talkers – so we enjoyed the ride. After Small World, we went over to Fantasy Gardens and got a photo with Donald in his Chinese gear. We got some photos printed out at the photo booth at Fantasy Gardens before checking out the rest of the shops in Fantasyland again. Next up was Cinderella’s Royal Carousel before walking through to Toy Story Land to do some shopping at Andy’s Toy Box.

By now, it was dinner, so we went back to Fantasyland and had a Chinese meal at Clopin’s Festival of Foods. After dinner, it was cooling down, so we went to the locker, dropped off our shopping and picked up our jackets. We then staked out a spot on a bench for the 8pm fireworks. As soon as the fireworks were over, we were heading down Main Street with all our collected baggage and heading out the main gate for the walk back to the Disneyland Hotel. Another day over!

Day 6 - 28 March 2014 – Tung Chung and Stanley
No Disney planned for today, instead we were catching up with a friend of mine from work and then heading where ever our feet took us. But before all that, we got up early and headed downstairs for breakfast at Walt’s Café. We had a great cooked breakfast of bacon, scrambled eggs to order, hash browns and mushrooms. Once breakfast was over, we walked up to the Disneyland Resort train station to catch the MTR to Sunny Bay and then one stop further to Tung Chung (near the airport).

My friend Deborah had recently moved back to Hong Kong and lives in one of the high rise apartments overlooking the airport. She met us at the Citygate Outlet Mall and we walked around the shops for a while and stopped for a coffee too. We asked heaps of questions about living in Hong Kong and places to shop etc. She gave us lots of tips but said to try Stanley Markets for some of the things Della was after.

We said goodbye to Deborah after lunch and headed back on the train into Hong Kong. We then caught the 260 bus for the Central Exchange out to Stanley. It was a fun ride upstairs on the double decker bus. When we arrived at Stanley – it was quite busy as the Rugby Sevens tournament is on here now and there were lots of visitors there from around the world. The markets themselves were similar to what we remember from a bus tour we took in 2006, but the area around them had been built up a lot more.

In the markets, Della bought some Chinese purses and a new top, and I bought my sister a silk wrap. We had a great time there but it pays to shop around each stall as the prices vary a lot but it was all pretty cheap and we were happy with what we got.

We then returned to Central on the bus – this time we got front row seats upstairs and we glad for the seatbelts as it was pretty stop-start once we were in traffic. It was a fun adventure though. We had a quick look in the mall at the International Financial Centre, but it was just big brand names there, so we caught the MTR back to Disney. We had dinner again at Walt’s Café (three courses – yummo) before finally returning to our room for the night! Back to Disney stuff tomorrow.

I'd be interested in your friends shopping tips. I've yet to find HK a shoppers paradise. The markets in Kowloon are poor and the shopping centres either high-end or the fashions just too Asian (and small). Stanley markets are a much better market than temple st and ladies market but there aren't many bargains. I've always wondered where the locals shop

29 March 2014 – Hong Kong Disneyland
Another big day ahead for us, but first up was breakfast and again we headed downstairs to Walt’s Café. I had the scrambled eggs, bacon, mushrooms and hash browns, while Della had the eggs benedict. Today was the first day since we arrived where the sun wasn’t shining. In fact, the footpaths outside were wet from earlier rainfall. The forecast was for passing showers later.

During breakfast, we made a list of things we needed to buy for people, and around 10:15, we headed off to the park on a specific shopping trip. It was sprinkling a little but we had a Sheriff Woody umbrella and got to the park mostly dry. Once we were in the park, we headed straight to the Emporium, and we had been there only a minute or two when a horrendous thunderstorm struck! The rain was flooding into the store, along with many wet people – we were so lucky we hadn’t been caught out in the walk between the Disneyland Hotel and the park!

We shopped in the Emporium for about an hour and it was a mad-house – just about everyone in the park had come to the same place to get out of the water. As soon as the storm eased, everyone just disappeared from the shop! We crossed the road to the Crystal Arts shop and bought a few more gifty things before heading back to the hotel around lunchtime.

Why were we going back around lunchtime? We had a date with Duffy at the Hollywood Hotel! Yes – we were enrolled in the Duffy cake decoration session and I have to say it was a complete blast!!! Firstly, we went to the sports bar in the Hollywood Hotel to check in. There were about nine parties on the list and VIP was recorded beside our name! We were led into the bar and took a reserved lounge and were offered drinks while we waited for the other couples to arrive. When everyone was there, we all had an afternoon tea which included prawn cutlets, chicken and egg rolls, fresh fruit, cakes, salmon and other stuff – we ate it all! We also met the Hollywood Hotel managers, Leo, Mike and Patrick who were fantastic guys. They presented Della and I with a card signed by all the cast members from the sports bar for our 1-year engagement anniversary. They also presented us with a balloon Duffy which was so cool!

Next thing we know, the party besides us present Della with a Valentine’s Duffy card and some buttons – they were local Hong Kong people and were crazy Disney and Duffy fans and the nicest people you’d ever meet. We got talking and took photos with each other, it was great (we have their email addresses, so we’ll keep in touch). They had a friend of theirs coming from Japan just for this Duffy cake day – he was flying back to Tokyo tonight and they called him Uncle Duffy (unfortunately, his plane arrived into Hong Kong late – so he only made it for the Duffy photo at the end!)

After afternoon tea – we were taken into Chef Mickey’s and presented with our Duffy Chef’s hat and apron which we put on, and we were sat at a table each with all the ingredients for making our Duffy cakes. There were sponge layers, fruit, creams, and piping bags all prepared. At the front of us all were two people explaining what we had to do (in Cantonese) but we also had a helper who walked around who told us in English how it all worked. All the participants understood English too and we were all having a great time putting our Duffy cakes together! There was also a photographer who was recording everything. Our finished Duffy cakes all looked really good too!

After we made the cakes, they were photographed and then boxed up and then Duffy came out for a meet and greet and that was great fun too as there was just a small number of us and we had Duffy all to ourselves.

If you are going to Hong Kong during Star Guest time – I highly recommend doing the Duffy cake decoration event as it was a lot of fun and you never know who you’ll meet during the session, it was a great Disney-magic experience.

After cake decorating, we headed back to the Disneyland Hotel. We had two cakes to refrigerate, so we went to the front desk and they took them from us for cold storage – we’ll donate one to the Hotel cast members and eat the other ourselves later. Once we’d dropped them off, we headed back to Disneyland as it was now 6:30pm. We had dinner in the Royal Banquet hall before finding a great firework viewing spot in the hub for the 8pm fireworks. After the fireworks, we waited for the crowd to disperse, before making our way down Main Street and back to the hotel. Another fun day over!

Day 7 - 30 March 2014 – Hong Kong Disneyland
I met Rapunzel today – but before I get to that, let’s rewind to this morning when we woke up. It was an early start this morning as we had a character breakfast booked at the Enchanted Garden. We headed down there at 7:30am, ate our food, then met a few old friends – Goofy, Pluto, Mickey and Daisy! Daisy was so cool as we hadn’t seen her yet this trip. As soon as breakfast was over, we did another quick walk through the shop prior to heading off to the park again. We took our umbrella today as it looked like it might rain again but for the time being, it was dry.

We got to the park right on opening and went straight into Town Square to get our photos with Mickey and Minnie. Of course – many other people had decided to do the same thing so we lined up for over an hour! I popped out of line for a bit to get a locker, then rejoined with plenty of time to spare. Eventually, we got our photo taken with them and had a few good laughs.

After photos, we walked down Main Street and past Snow White near her wishing well. We also ran into Belle and Cinderella as they were leaving a Bibiddi-Bobiddi-Boutique meet and greet. We headed into Toy Story Land and I grabbed a churro and Della had a yogurt with nuts and Oreo crumbs. We then went into Mystic Point to grab some presents. In Grizzly Gulch, Della wanted a selfie and as we had our backs to a geyser, it erupted all over us – very funny.

We then headed back to Main Street for lunch of muffins, sandwiches and iced chocolate which we ate in Town Square again. We went into the photo shop and picked up our photos with Mickey and Minnie. Della wanted to check out the jewellery store once more so she went in there while I put the photos in the locker. I joined her shortly afterwards but there was nothing new she wanted. Next up, we headed to Crystal Arts and bought a few more little gifts.

After a little wander around, we headed back down Main Street to visit City Hall - this is because we were the Grand Marshals of today’s parade! We had been asked to visit City Hall by 2:45pm, but we got there at 2:30pm. We were met by Matt who greeted us by name. He took us into a small room inside City Hall with pictures of American Presidents who had visited the US parks. We sat on the lounge and Matt gave us our Grand Marshal ears with our names on them. We took lots of photos of us and gave us a certificate to show we had been Grand Marshals. He also gave us a gift back of pictures and stickers – it was great!

Around 3pm, we got our Mickey-hand gloves and then walked with Matt up to the beginning of the parade route. Matt told us about is background and working in Disney on the way. When we got to the top of the parade route, we met Peter, the Grand Marshal vehicle driver and got a photo with him. We jumped aboard the vehicle and started waving like mad-people! All the way down the parade route, people were waving and taking photos. As we turned into the hub, I saw an Australian flag waving and realised it the Aloyious and Bonnie – the couple we met the day before at the Duffy cake decorating! They were waving the flags and we waved back! They also followed us all the way to the end of Main Street – so much fun!

Eventually, our ride ended and we went back to City Hall with Matt. Inside, we handed back our gloves and said thanks to all the City Hall cast members and to Matt. We went outside and caught up with Aloyious and Bonnie and they introduced us to three more of their friends, Agnes, Penny, and Thomas who were all Hong Kong locals and mad Disney fans too. Aloyious gave us a bunch of lovely gifts including a photo album, buttons, stickers and cards, and Penny gave us a Chinese New Year Disney pin. We were very touched by these great Disney fans – I only wish we had something we could have given them in return! We’ll send them something when we get back to Australia.

While we were talking outside City Hall, we had complete strangers coming up to us to get photos with us! It was very strange but cool at the same time! We then headed to the hub with our friends and got some castle photos, before they headed off to see The Lion King. We couldn’t go with them as we had another appointment back at the hotel to meet. Instead, we went over to the castle and lined up for a photo with Rapunzel (see – I told you I’ve met Rapunzel!). She was great too – she told me about how she had her helpers get her hair ready each day and all the brushing that was required!

After Rapunzel, we went for a quick walk around the park (and got stopped for photos again) before heading to Crystal Arts for more gifts. We picked up our gear from the locker, and said a final goodbye to the folks at City Hall, before walking back to the hotel at around 5:30.

At 6pm, we went to the front desk and were escorted up to the hotel’s Kingdom Club for nibbles, drinks and fireworks. We got up there and found a great table near the window. As we were sitting there eating, we could see flashes in the sky as a massive stormfront came straight toward Disneyland! Next thing you know – crazy lightning, heavy (HEAVY) rain and loud thunder came crashing down. We were so glad we weren’t in the park waiting for the fireworks. Around 7:50pm, they came around the Kingdom Club saying a black rain weather warning had been issued and the park closed and fireworks cancelled – that didn’t upset us though as we were dry and watching the most amazing lightning display we’d ever seen!

Of course – around 8:15pm, we heard some kids squeeling, as around the corner into the club comes Minnie Mouse in her PJs! Then I realised, it wasn’t just the kids squeeling, but Della too! Minnie had her pink PJs with red polka dots and fluffy slippers – she was so cute! We got photos with her and then watched the kids go to the bedtime story session. We had a wonderful night up in the club.

We then went to the lobby and ordered our Duffy cakes to be delivered to our room. Room service arrived with our two cakes, and Della had the hard job of slicing one of them up. When we started eating it, we realised how delicious they were! As we had two cakes and couldn’t possibly eat them both, we took the second untouched cake down to the front desk and donated it to the cast members who were very happy to get it!

It is now 10:20pm, the storm is still raging and we are about to begin packing – another amazing holiday is almost over, although we still have tomorrow morning in the park ahead.

Our special thanks go out to Barry and Narelle for arranging such a wonderful experience!
Keith
