I did a character meet with Mushu but I expected Mulan would have a bigger presence in the park! There wasn't even any merchandise which was very disappointing!
No merchandise? You're in HKDL and there is no merchandise for Mulan or Mushu??? :?:

Thats astounding!

A Mushu fluffy/souvenirs are the first thing I'd have looked for in HKDL

The merchandise overall just didn't compare to DL. I think it is probably due to the lack of a solid fan-base yet. For many in this part of the world Disney is a relatively new thing - not something that most people grew up with and there is a lot of unofficial Disney stuff in the markets and shops - particularly Pooh!

I think that seeing as Mulan is based on a Chinese tale, then surely there is a great 'ready to capitalise on' story there in their push to make HKDL more attractive to the Chinese population and therefore increase visits.
I'm very surprised that Mushu, Mulan and other characters from the movie are not way up there in the merchandise stakes in the country the tale originated in. Maybe the Chinese people would embrace 'their' characters if their profiles were emphasized a little more.

And Please Disney if you are listening... make at least one mushu fluffy by the time I ever get there.... I'm going to want to buy one if I'm in HK.

I think Keith and Della had photos with Mushu when they visited so with a little luck (or a lucky cricket  ) you'll get to see Mushu but its not sounding too good on the 'take home' variety.

I'm sure you guys will have a fantastic time, just the same. On the 'baby swap' question... my kids were with me on our trip to TDL and they have that system there so I'd be very surprised if its not operating at HKDL. Although my kids were kindy/primary school aged, we still used the 'baby swap' cos one of them was terrified of any ride that 'wooshed'. in fact, he asked us to 'knock him on the head to put him out of his misery' after we talked him into going on Roger Rabbits Car-toon spin... hehee.. that was his last 'woosh' ride for the trip.

wicked photo.... -/

Getting a photo with Mushu is a 'must have' one for me one day. What's the chances of seeing Mushu in DL?

you have some great shots... have you thought about putting some of them in an album in the members section?
I'm sure we'd all love to take a peek at your 'snaps' (as my nanna used to call them. )

Cool... I'll keep my eyes open.. .I want a photo with my namesake to scrap. :)

Although for some reason, I think it'd be a little more special seeing him in HKDL purely because of his 'heritage'.

   OK, you get points for that one.

No silly... Mushu's CHINESE heritage.

I still think that HKDL should be emphasising the fact that Mulan is set in China. Just seems like a missed opportunity. I think that is the first place they should have started when they decided to make HKDL more attractive to the Chinese people. It's beyond me how they could overlook a local heroine and one of their favourite emblems - the dragon. The merchandising possibilities are enormous.

Yeah that would be the first time Disney had made a merchandising mistake - NOT

In 2003 and 2005 I was so frustrated that nearly all the merchandising seemed Pooh related.

This trip it was Princesses and Disney Fairies - now I like Tink but my kids did not ask for one Disney realted toy the whole 3 weeks, I would have bought them heaps if anything was around in their favourites like Cars and Hercules and even more fab 5 stuff.

I bought t-shirts but that was about it for them - everything they bought was from off site. Not all visitors are under 5 and not all visitors like Princesses or HSM.

When we visited the outlet shops most of the stuff was Princesses - because it is not universally appealing (except to Keith!)

The first time we went in 1994 and my first DL trip in 1989 the shopping was as much fun as the rest of the parks - special niche shops catering to the area they were in not 40 shops all selling the same thing. I still spend heaps as we all do on here but we wre "Disney Nerds" who are so merchandise starved out here we will just spend spend spend but not evey one is like that.

Ok - off soap box now - must have had too little sleep last night!

Sandie

That was their worldwide attitude too cos I remember that. I like Pooh bear but am not into the merchandise, and I remember that everything was Pooh.
This trip it was Princesses and Disney Fairies
And I am so over the Princess thing. Maybe its time they concentrated on some of the other heroines a little more. Mulan, Pocahontas and Esmeralda rarely get a run for instance.

And Ditto with the HSM stuff. I'm so disappointed that is the Disney on Ice this year. Its doubtful that I'll go.
For instance, I went Easter Egg shopping yesterday and the only Disney stuff on offer were Cars ( which was the only passable thing I saw) a sprinkling of HSM/Pooh and then reams of Princess stuff. I was standing there with money in my hands wanting to spend it and in the end, opted for the usual Red Tulip/Cadbury anyway.

Why not use Disney Rabbits on Easter Eggs? like Roger Rabbit or Rabbit from Pooh or Thumper or Brer Rabbit, or the White Rabbit or for us Disneyphiles ... Oswald the lucky Rabbit :)

Just a thought... :D

Fair comments on the merchandising - it is all becoming too generic and centered around either Princesses, Cars, HSM, Pirates, Toy Story, or Pooh - to the exclusion of nearly everything else. (And despite rumours to the contrary, I don't collect Princess merchandise - I just stalk them in the parks...!!)

There are lots of Disney character groups being ignored both locally and in the parks. It has got to the point where if you find something outside the norm, you just buy it immediately no matter what junk it is, because it is such a rarity: "Oh wow, look, a set of 'D' type batteries with Phoebus on them" - "Yeah, but they are just batteries, why do you want them" - "Because they have Phoebus on them, and you never see that!"

Get my point? :) We like variety...
Keith
