Concept Art

Postby KeithS » Tue Jul 20, 2010 7:19 pm

Okay people - let the speculation begin!

These are exciting times people - we have our first piece of Shanghai Disneyland concept art!

This is an image of a slide that appeared at the Walt Disney Family Museum during a presentation celebrating the 55th Anniversary of Disneyland on Saturday.

Image

So what do you see here? A fairly traditional layout with a hub and spokes to different lands. A different castle, a Big Thunder similar to Paris, LOTS of water (which I love!) and lots of other little details.

Come on peoples - what do you think/see here :D

Oh wow...

do you suppose the bit out the front is a shopping precinct?

Does look very watery huh?

Is that a hotel at the bottom left corner with lit walkway over the water?

I think you're right Lisa - I also think that there is a Downtown Disney area - where the beams of light are coming from.

What about the top left in the shadows - does that look like another hotel accessible by water?

yep, I was thinking that was a DTD at the entrance. Imagine walking from the hotel at the bottom across the island to the park... Day or night that'd be magnificent.

There definitely is water flowing into the park at the top LHS from whatever that is, likely a hotel... imagine getting on a junk to sail into the park... that'd be WAY cool. -/

I'm thinking main road down the left side of the picture with a big roundabout and a lit walkway from the parking area to the entrance.

My initial musings about the park, before this slide, was that being such a port/water city, there would perhaps be a hybrid of Disney Sea and the Disney Land. I guess they have to make it different/enticing enough for the locals to travel to BOTH destinations rather than just the one, so incorperating a Sea aspect is really just a reflection of their city's position and heritage. I'm REALLY excited by the possibility of 3 really different parks so (relatively) close to home that could quite easily be visited in one trip.

Do we know when the park is slated to open?

Want some more artwork that may be Shanghai concepts? Check these out from Tim Delaney. Tim was a Walt Disney Imagineer before leaving the company earlier this year to start up his own design company. Here are some of his designs that he was working on for WDI at the time of his departure.

REMOVED
Disney Railway Station

REMOVED
Space Mountain

REMOVED
Tomorrowland (if it looks similar to Hong Kong, that is because Tim designed Hong Kong Disneyland's Tomorrowland!)

REMOVED
PiratesLand (this is actually from the cancelled Hong Kong Disneyland Piratesland concept)

REMOVED
Jungle Cruise boat (new theming)

REMOVED
The Nautillus (possibly from the cancelled Glacier Bay land at HKDL)

It is a shame that Tim left WDI - but he left us with a great legacy of attractions in parks around the world - and these concept drawings such as the railway station and space mountain are dated 2008 - so they could only be for Shanghai. Whether the final versions of these attractions look like this or not - we'll just have to wait and see!

Note that these are really large images - so you might have to right-click and save them, then open them in a picture viewer to see the full thing!

EDIT (30/JAN/2012): It would appear that Disney asked Tim to remove quite a large number of concept images from his website recently... It would appear they were too revealing!

Shiny railway station.
If you look carefully at the Shanghai DL overview image, it looks like it is the same railway station with the big centre gold tower and the gold bands on the ends.

It is also interesting the the train station also has tram cars out the front - a transport system from the hotels and transportation centre perhaps (like the monorail system in WDW?)

Oh wow... cool...

Are they piranhas in the water of the Jungle cruise?

Love the station, and I think you are right Keith - they look like tram cars which would be perfect for hotel/park/hotel transfers.

Don't think much of Skull Rock though... how on earth would I scrap that?
