Disney Live!

Postby KeithS » Sat Jul 31, 2010 9:42 am

If anyone went to Disney on Ice a few weeks ago, you would have seen advertising for this year's Disney Live! event - Three Classic Fairytales.

Customers of Optus Tickets can now prebook up to September 1 - when the general public tickets go on sale.

The blurb for the show is:
Prepare to laugh, sing, and dream! Join Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, and Donald Duck for an amazing fantasy adventure that brings the enchanted stories and music of Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast to life. Be dazzled by beauty as you experience the adventure, humour and romance of Disney Live! presents Three Classic Fairy Tales. It's a world of pure enchantment waiting for you!

The show is being held in Sydney in January. To visit the Optus Ticket's website, click here: http://www.yestickets.com.au/

You'll need to register if you are not already a member.

There is a family ticket price which is really good, but we won't be able to make this one. I'll have a two-week-old (or thereabouts) when it's in Sydney. I'm starting to think that this baby is a Disney-hater! No club trip, no Disney Live... :(

I found out this is touring the country and pre-sale tickets can be booked through ticketmaster.com.au - you'll have to enter the pre-sale code of DL4M.

We tried booking yesterday but had trouble getting tickets near the centre - so we'll try again today. The family ticket is good value if you are taking the kids.

Hi all - we went and saw this yesterday and ran into Wayne and Jennifer there as well.

The show was okay for what it was, but I think I much prefer the Disney on Ice spectaculars for their fancy lightning, staging and ice skating skills.

The staging here was pretty basic and the actors were performing to a recording rather than singing and acting live - so I think we see much better shows at the theme parks (like Beauty and the Beast at WDW, or Big Band Beat & One Man's Dream etc. in Tokyo)

One interesting thing however, was the use of the animated character heads for Mickey, Minnie, Goofy and Donald. These are the heads that have appeared on stage shows in WDW, with blinking eyes and moving mouths. I thought they were very effective and it was good to see them touring here.

As for the show itself, it was in two Acts, with Mickey & Co introducing the three stories. Act 1 began with Snow White and most of Cinderella. Act 2 was the finale to Cinderella and then Beauty and the Beast. The costuming was terrific and the Sydney Entertainment Centre was packed with mums, dads, and thousands of mini-princesses...

Merchandise was mainly limited to expensive princess stuff, but they had a nice program for $18 (plus $2 for the nice Disney Princess plastic bag).

We had a good time but on the whole thought the "Disney Live" title was a bit of a stretch given it was entirely lip-synced! They are doing an entirely different Disney Live next summer, so it looks like this will be an ongoing program in summer to supplement the Disney on Ice shows in winter.

So, is anyone else going to this year's Disney Live! Mickey's Music Festival at the Sydney Entertainment Centre this weekend?

http://www.disney.com.au/disneylive/

It'll be interesting to compare it to last year's "Three Classic Fairytales" production which was not as good as the theme park shows or the Disney on Ice presentations.

I'll aim to get a review up on Sunday - although I am a little concerned by the advertising blurb which includes "Disney hits are remixed to the hottest sounds of today including hip hop..." I have to say though, that when I go in with low expectations, I'm usually pleasantly surprised, so here is hoping!

I have seen the ads and am happy to steer clear from this sort of show. For some reason it just didn't grab me as a quality Disney production. Will be interested to read your review Keith. Hope you enjoy it.

My family went in Perth on 28.12.11 and personally I loved it.

The rest of my family DH, 15, 12 & 6yr old were not that thrilled. Don't get me wrong - the show will entertain but if you have been to a Disney park/cruised with Disney, you may just be a little too spoiled to enjoy this show!
The food and souvenirs were very reasonably priced. (Disney junior guitar $30 - told my son "No" and he was fine with not purchasing anything!)

FYI - our all time family favourite Disney show was Tokyo Disney Sea's "Masquerade"...brilliant!

Awesome - I was a bit worried about the hip-hop, and there have been some dodgy shows lately at DCA that were trying to be hip and edgy, but came over a bit lame, but I'm feeling a bit more confident now!

I think youve nailed the issue right here - we are a little spoiled.

Brilliant indeed! One of my all time favourites too, I'm glad I got to see it a couple of times when I was up there (makes me want to listen tothe soundtrack when going home tonight!)

Okay, so we went to see Mickey's Music Festival yesterday afternoon - and love it!

Such a big improvement over last year's show. It was entertaining (always a plus!), upbeat, funny, energetic, and the music, sets, costumes and cast were great!

It is similar in some ways to Disney on Ice - it has three Disney music stories linked together by Mickey, Minnie and gang.

After the introductory numbers, we spin off into an Aladdin production, which included Aladdin, Jasmine, the Genie, and the carpet - and featured a lot of the great songs from that movie.

We then cut to a sequence with Sebastian from the Little Mermaid and Ariel's sisters. I really like how they mixed recent songs into this production, for example, we get to see the sisters perform Beyonce's Single Ladies (Put a ring on it) - and it really worked in this context.

After an intermission, we returned with Ariel, Ursula and Prince Eric.

Then there was a brilliant Toy Story section which began with the Toy Soldier Drill team, who were drilling in perfect harmony with the animated team of toy soldiers on the big screen behind the stage - it was awesome. And then Woody and Jessie came out with Bullseye (who was terrific!) and they did this cool rope skip routine - I never thought I'd ever see Bullseye skipping a rope!

Then they all blasted into space and we met Buzz Lightyear - a section that included an meteor shower, which resulted in giant meteor beachballs being thrown into the crowd - funny stuff.

There was also a dance routine that Jessie and Woody taught the crowd, and everyone was getting into it. I've been to a lot of Disney events in Sydney, but I've never seen a crowd this much into a show before - like I said, this was pure fun and entertainment.

The show had a big finale of course, where all the cast come onto stage and perform a couple more songs and fire confetti into the air.

All in all - it was a most enjoyable afternoon - well done to the Disney Live production team!

Yesterday, Della and I went to the Disney Live! Mickey's Rockin Road Show.

Unfortunately, it wasn't as good as last year's terrific show. Whereas last year was great fun for the whole family (all ages), this year was much closer to a Playhouse Disney or Wiggles-type show - it was definitely aimed at a young kids audience. The show was competent for what it was, but the fabulous sets and dance music from last year were non-existent. With a title like Rockin' Road Show - we were expecting big musical numbers with Mickey on the drums or something like that - but it never really lifted above nursery-age entertainment - quality nursery-age entertainment (the little kids in the audience were having a great time); but anyone over 10 felt a bit out of touch.

Next year, Disney Live! is presenting Mickey's Magic Show - so hopefully this will be a return to a broader age group event. If not, we probably won't go to further of these and stick with Disney on Ice instead.
