HSM - Live on Stage

Postby KeithS » Mon Jun 23, 2008 8:26 am

I don't know if you guys know this, but there is to be a production of "High School Musical - Live on Stage" at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney in late December and most of January. I've never actually seen the movies, but Della has - and she insisted that I buy tickets...

It goes on sale to the general public this Friday through Ticketmaster, however there are some pre-sales happenning now for Qantas Frequent Flyers and other similar presale organisations.

I liked HSM, but the ticket prices are so high for this, we'll be giving it a miss. :(

Yep - I think my tickets were as expensive as the A-reserves for Phantom of the Opera

There are plenty of amateur versions doing the community theatre circuit and they are a lot cheaper - perhaps not the quality - but who knows? My kids' school is putting it on in August.

I guess we can expect to flooded with "Camp Rock" now after its success in the US!

Yep - that is definitely one thing that we can count on! And "Camp Rock on Ice", and "Camp Rock on Stage", and "Camp Rock II - Rockers get Campier!"

Considering they allocate whole days per year to it at the parks, I reckon they're becoming more open.

Maybe not anymore - one of the outcomes of the closing of Pleasure Island is certain groups not wishing to have their days at WDW anymore!
"Camp Rock II - Rockers get Campier!"
Maybe we need a new thread - "Movie Titles Disney will never use."

Okay, I finally got to see HSM - On Stage last night and...

...

...

It was REALLY good!

That's right, I'm admitting it (and providing fodder for Anthony following my "Beaches" comments)

I went in with pretty low expectations, considering it was a cast of Australian and New Zealand unknowns. But the entire cast were excellent, the routines were amazingly choreographed, the singing was particularly good, and the show was just pure entertainment.

The show pretty much followed the storyline of the movie with a few Disney inside jokes thrown in.

Yep - I had baulked at the ticket price - as had MANY others as the theatre was only half full (they hadn't even opened the upstairs section - unheard of in a Sydney Disney production) but in the end, I felt I got my monies worth.

My one gripe and note to Disney - just because your ticket prices are high, it doesn't mean people from Western Sydney can't afford to go to the show - so drop the patronising "Rooty Hill" joke - it wasn't funny and was inappropriately placed in the show about an American High School - you had a good story, and didn't need to instill some Australianism into it - it made it a little 'cheap'

Ahhhh, but it wasn't a joke about the funny name - it was about the type of people who live there, and that is not fair.

Disney has pulled the plug on HSM - Live on Stage. Sydney is closing early and the national tour has been cancelled.

A shame for the performers who I thought were excellent.
