Donald Duck named after Donald Bradman?

The news piece I posted today about the Donald Duck sketch claims that he may have been named after Donald Bradman. I've never heard this and seriously doubt it.

Anyone else ever heard the theory before?

I have my doubts about this theory. Cant be sure news about Sir Don even made it to the USA at the time Donald Duck was created.

Or that they would have cared if news did reach them.

I had just assumed that it was an alliterative name as so many character names are.

Okay - well I've done some more Duck research and probably the best source of information regarding this rumour can be found in this article:

It is a US website devoted to cricket (yes, they do know of cricket in some circles).  And cricket was definitely more popular in the US in the past - with some of the early international tours being held in the US and Canada by both England and Australia.  But I think the lure of baseball eventually put to rest any hope of a competitive competition...

Anyway - take a read of the article above - they don't confirm that Walt named Donald after Don Bradman - they just put forth that timing and circumstance could have lead him to be inspired by The Don.

Damn, that was actually really interesting and may push me a little bit towards being convinced, although by no means 100% convinced. 


It would make for a great trivia question though.
