Okay - well I've done some more Duck research and probably the best source of information regarding this rumour can be found in this article:

It is a US website devoted to cricket (yes, they do know of cricket in some circles). And cricket was definitely more popular in the US in the past - with some of the early international tours being held in the US and Canada by both England and Australia. But I think the lure of baseball eventually put to rest any hope of a competitive competition...
Anyway - take a read of the article above - they don't confirm that Walt named Donald after Don Bradman - they just put forth that timing and circumstance could have lead him to be inspired by The Don.
