Pixie or Fairy?

Postby mushu mama » Tue Dec 11, 2007 5:51 pm

Just thought I'd run this by you guys...

This was something that had everyone at a recent scrap night taking sides...

Is Tinkerbell a pixie or a fairy?

My vote is Pixie.

Some thought that because she was part of the 'Disney Fairies' push that in turn made her a fairy.
But she's mischievous and temperamental which is more pixie/imp behaviour than cute and sweet fairy.

Or is there no difference between fairy and pixie other than semantics?

what does everyone else think?

Of course pixie - Flora, Fauna and Merriweather are more Fairies. Tink is to much of a smart bottom to be a sweet fairy.

Of course she is a bit like those fairies in labyrinth.

Clearly a Pixie. regardless of the intricate reasons, "all you need is a little bit of pixie dust", and you don't get pixie dust from a fairy!

She is a pixie. No doubt about that. You only need to watch the Peter pan dvd extras to hear that. What I dont understand is whats with the Disney fairy's that shes part of. How does it work? :S

Let me teach you new Padwan - we have a pixie who Disney is not making enough money off. How do we fix that? We suddenly invent 4 Fairies who we hope the dumb public - especially girls under 10 and middle aged women with a female Peter Pan complex will accept. We merchandise the hell out of them because for some reason Pooh isn't selling as well as it used to and we are too lame to try and individualise our merchandise?

Get the picture? I better go have one of my happy pills now to calm down.

Sandie

p.s. Tink is one of my top three but the Fairy line leaves me cold

The books are quite attractive though. No I don't own any of them, but I've looked at them in the shops and the artwork is very nice. In fact, if it wasn't in the "Disney Fairy" range, you'd probably think this was a decent series.

But I'm with Sandie on this - the whole range is designed to pierce the market in case the princess craze dries up - wait until the Tinkerbell movie gets released - it will be a marketing tidalwave...

Tinkerbell movie? Now this I'm not looking forward. I agree with the generall sentiment. This mutlilayered marketing with the characters is getting out of hand. Princesses (who are not actually princesses), fairies, Pooh, Pirates etc, just reeks of modern corporate exploitation of past successes to appeal to the masses (sounds like one of my favourite rants from the Monty Python Holy Grail movie). The only decent thing they should do with Tink is to leave her entombed in the classic Peter Pan and to fly high above the castle during the fireworks!

P.S. I'm not anti Tink by the way, just think that some things need to be left alone :D

Re: Pixie or Fairy?

Wow - I thought I'd raise this topic again, because it has been debated by Della and I over the last few weeks.

You see - we finally got around to watching the Tinker Bell movie on DVD a week or two ago. The movie isn't great, but it's not too bad. It 'looks' beautiful - the colours and animation etc, but the story is definitely aimed at a younger market.

Anyhow - what irked us both while we were watching is that Tink and all her friends are specifically labeled as "Fairies". All through the movie, Della kept calling out "she's a pixie, not a fairy". I thought at some point that this was going to be a plot point of the movie (hopefully showing that Tink is actually a pixie and therefore different from the rest - hence why she can travel to the real world) - Alas, I was too optimistic and there was no plot point - Tink is just a fairy in the new series of movies. "Pixie-dust" does exist in the movie, but there is no other reference to 'pixies'.

But now I've done some research into the pixie/fairy debate. As you all know, J.M. Barrie wrote the original Peter and Wendy book. In the book, Barrie describes her as "a common fairy" - the word Pixie is NEVER used in the book! She helps others to fly by sprinkling them with "fairy dust". The term "pixie-dust" was purely a Disney invention - probably to make it more friendly to US audiences in the 1950's.

So there you have it - is Disney actually trying to right the wrongs of the past by reintroducing Tinker Bell as a fairy - as she was originally written by J.M. Barrie? Or are they just using "Fairies" as they sound nicer to little girls nagging their parents to buy stuff?
