My Computer Disaster (time to vent!)

Postby KeithS » Tue Jul 17, 2012 9:14 pm

Arrgghhhhhh!!!!!

I had a computer disaster at home tonight. My hard drive that contains ALL my music, videos, photos and documents died... :(

Luckily, Della has most of the photos, but my entire music collection is gone, along with all my documents which is a disaster.

I'll take the drive to a forensics person tomorrow to see if they can recover anything, but I'm not very confident...

Bloody computers!!!!

Ouch! Hope you can get it all back. It is one of my fears to lose data, photos and everything.

I found an article today to show how to move all your songs from an iPod back to your computer - so I should be able to recover my music.

As Della has the photos, I've just lost my large movie trailer collection, all my television shows and all my documents (which is the most painful). I'll see my forensics person this morning and see if he can extract that directory...

And then I'll be off to buy a new hard drive, plus an external backup hard drive for my media and documents!

I'm becoming a bigger fan of cloud storage (especially now!) - I may have to look into this as an option.

Many years ago (over 30) I read about the most wonderful thing in the paper. It was a computer that you could buy and have on your desk! There was a Home Show in Brisbane, selling vacuums and fridges, that would have a stand showing off these amazing computers. I made the long trip from the southern Gold Coast up to Brisbane, a long way in those days especially if you weren't old enough to drive, and eagerly sought out the booth .

I stood and watched the demos that the salesman was making and was blown away. I had to have one and would have sold my soul.

At the end of one demo he was asking if anyone had any questions and I eagerly put my hand up.

He then said something like (it was a long time ago so I can't remember exactly) "Go away kid, you couldn't afford it"

I looked up at the sign over the booth and thought to myself "Apple! I am never going to buy one of those!" And I never have.

Of course Apple has made it easy to stick to that vow.

...and so the boy saved his money and bought a beta video-tape system!

LOL!

Greg - I was in a similar place. I did a computer night school course in 1981 with my Dad. There were all these long-haired nerds coming along and it was a mis-mash of computers from Kaypros, Apricots, an Apple, Osbourne, and Mircobees - they were running a mish-mash of operating systems from Fortran, CPM, and Basic - to me, it was awesome. We looked at various computers to buy, including the Apple (which was hideously expensive back then - about $3,000), and ended up buying a Dick Smith System 80 which was fantastic (a TRS-80 clone) for around $1,000 - similar capability (the Apple had a floppy drive whereas the System 80 was tape, but the System 80 had better B&W graphics, software support, and text support). Remembering that wages were about $200 a week back then. Spending $3,000 was nearly five month's salary! Even the $1,000 was bad - Dad justified it to Mum saying it would benefit me - and it did in the long run.

The guy who spoke to you was probably right Greg - you couldn't afford one!

The funny thing was that I could afford it and would have given him the money on the spot. I ended up buying a trs80 instead.

He lost a sale on an assumption and apple lost thousands of dollars over the years.

Never make an assumption based on appearances.

These are wonderful tales kiddies, and I used to be like you both. But after years of self support, endless driver and security updates and constant rebooting, I looked elsewhere. I'm not a fanboi nor will I be a fandroid, just whatever works best for me.

No truer words spoken!

I game and I game mod - therefore I PC. It is as simple as that.
