The release of the tablet has definitely thrown the mobile computing market into a spin. I was putting off getting a tablet because I didn't know what I would use it for, and now that I've got one, I still don't know what I'm going to use it for. But having said that, I am determined to utilise it to the fullest, starting by using it as my mobile comms and digital storage device whilst we're away. It is light, does everything that Greg has mentioned like auto start up etc. Lisa, if you're only looking for something as a photo storage device then explore other options like portable HDD that allow you to stick your memory straight in and download automatically. Specialist photo shops have these in abundance.

I do not see any difference between a tablet and a mini laptop. In fact, and this is purely opinion and no technical basis behind it, I reckon the tablet would be a better option, purely because everything for the tablet is tablet specific whereas mini laptops components are reduced and squeezed into a smaller box. Like the tablet, upon the mini laptop release I couldn't understand the need for one.

The other point to consider is the arguments of the "i hate everything apple" brigade versus the "apple is superior" team. I'm probably the latter, but ultimately I'm in the "why the hell does windows keep bothering" camp. However I have used both Android devices and Apple mobile devices and, well, the best I can say is, nice try Google, but if you're going to copy, at least make it as easy to use. Yes the iDevices have some limitations, but everything that is needed is available. Our home is applefied, so obviously we are better suited for those products, but the Samsung phone of my father on Android, aside from already having failed after 6 months, is a little confusing and not simple to use.

The bottom line in all this is, it is personal preference. Lisa, go down to Dick Smith or JB HiFi or something like that and check out everything in one sitting and make the decision from there. Whatever you choose will work for you, just as long as it is what you need. Does that help?

i agree with what Anthony says about picking a device that best suits your needs.

While I'm mainly a PC person, that is because I'm a gamer, and the PC runs high-end games better than any other device. And the reason we bought the Netbook over the iPad was because we needed a light weight PC which we could install MYOB on for Della's business. So it all comes down to personal needs.

Netbooks serve a purpose, tablets serve a different purpose and at a different price point. I think Android and iPad tablets are too expensive for what you get, but the prices are set by what people are willing to pay I guess. Netbooks aren't flashy but you can get one for $300 with a 320gb hard drive which makes them good value for money if they do job you want them to do.

If you want to run apps or wish to build a media collection or publish videos online etc., get an iPad because its integration of services and content delivery is brilliant.

Horses for courses!

Thanks guys... lots of good advice there...

I've decided that for now, a little laptop is going to both suit my pricepoint and my blogging/photo manipulation needs. I'm sure I'll buy some kind of tablet one day cos they are lots of fun. I love the apple products we have, iPhones and iTouch are indispensable here on a daily basis so I guess I'm sitting on the fence and leaning over towards the apple side as far as those items go.

I'm also buying a camera and a few other exy items to take on my trip so I am going to go with something less expensive that does the job this time.

So why are increasingly more Disney Parks YouTube clips unable to be played on iPad? Now it seems every second clip has been blocked by Disney on iPad.

Disney needs to read the stats!

I've noticed this too with official Disney Youtube videos - I get a message saying that the content owner has not provided permission to view on mobile devices or something like that. The official Disney Youtube videos also can't be embedded in website forums like ours - they've disabled that too. You have to find a copy of the video elsewhere on youtube that someone else is hosting.

I don't understand.

For a company with such a vast and detailed "e" policy and strategy framework in place, they are really doing some bizarre things. It appears that the IP legalites are stopping everything the e-marketers are doing. What is going on in the Mouse House, things are going backwards in some respects.
