I'm looking at buying an Ipad. What 3G plans are people using?

I'm hoping to get mine around Chrissy to help me make the transition back to the working world. Will be interested to see the response here. Craig and I aren't big phone/internet users. Our mobile plans are the $20/month type so I'm reluctant to spend a great deal on my iPad plan when the time comes.

I am considering getting one for when I go away next year - much lighter than either of my lap tops - does anyone know how they are to travel with?

Gerard is our iPad traveling man - we need him to chime in.

Don't get an iPad!!!!

Get an ASUS Transformer. I've had mine for about 6 weeks or so and I'm loving it!

Same old, same old.

Taking volunteers to the hospital who, despite my almost constant pleading, don't drink enough water. We get teenagers who come from Europe and think they know what hot weather is and that they are bullet proof anyway. The first thing I tell them when I pick them up at the airport is to drink as much water as they can the whole time they are here. Do they take any notice?

Sorry, that's my rant for the day, but if you'd seen the local hospital you'd know why I prefer to spend as little time there as possible.

Wow - this has been a constant struggle for you! The hospital staff must know you on a first name basis!

Had to take someone else to the hospital last night because he had a dislocated finger. The stupid thing was that he waited a day to tell us because he wanted to do a jungle trek that everyone else was doing the following day. He spent all day trekking up and down muddy, overgrown paths and then when he got back last night said "I dislocated my finger yesterday and I think I need to go to the hospital now".

19 year olds!! :x

Sorry to hijack this thread.

To get it back on topic...the asus transformer is great.

It is android, comes with a keyboard that it slots into so that it seems exactly like a netbook. It has wifi, gps etc but it does lack 3G, although it can be tethered to a phone. The single greatest advantage it has over the ipad (apart from the fact that it isn't apple) is that it has plenty of connections. There are usb ports on the keyboard and the pad itself has hdmi and a mini sd card reader. That makes it easy to get things on and off it, a real plus compared to the ipad. You can even plug an external harddrive into it.

The one I got hasn't missed a beat and I can open all my office docs on it, read books, browse the web, get my emails, play games, watch movies etc. It's also so much lighter than even my little netbook, which is really handy since I have to have it with me 24 hours a day.

But the thing I love most (and this would apply to the ipad as well) is the instant on and off. Unlike a normal laptop, which takes forever to open up if you just want to quickly look at something and then forever to close down, this thing is on as soon as I push the button and off just as fast. I have all the volunteer details, rosters, tuktuk timetables, class schedules, emails, spreadsheets etc on it and can pull them up in a second.

An added bonus is that, although it appears to be off, it is still actively seeking a wifi signal and as soon as it finds one it locks on and checks my emails etc. I have the passwords for all of the local cafes and places around here that are broadcasting wifi and as I'm walking around it is constantly checking and downloading my email as well as downloading torrents (or it would be if it wasn't illegal to do that :? ) each time I'm in range of a signal. Free internet!

Have you watched all the movies you downloaded in HK?

I think I might be one of those vision impaired apple fans :? :?

tuktuk timetables
They run to a timetable?! :D
as well as downloading torrents (or it would be if it wasn't illegal to do that :? )
It probably isn't illegal in Laos!

It's coming, it's coming! Just got an email that my iPad is currently in Hong Kong and will should be here next week. I know I could have ducked down to the local shops and bought one then and there, but I'm getting it engraved.

Just to tease me, the cover I ordered should arrive today!

Has anybody seen this? Awesome idea. I hope they get them here soon, my boys will LOVE them.

On second thoughts, I've just watched the video on these Cars toys and if I get them, I will never even see my iPad! Maybe we DON'T want to get them after all...
