my first car

Postby mushu mama » Sun Jul 04, 2010 8:09 am

I finally 'get' all the kerfuffle about buying a car....

I bought my first car yesterday... yes... my first. I've only ever driven someone elses!

Course, its anything but 'new' per se, just new to me. In fact, I was still at college when this was new.

But its mine, and with minimal work, its going to be pretty schmick! Can't believe how excited I was to buy a car of all things.

And the V8 boys on here will be pleased to know its not a Holden. However, you might not be as impressed to know its also not a Ford.

Zach is picking it up for me this morning -/ -/ -/ cos I have to work  ..

Yay! First cars are always exciting. So what did you buy? You'll have to post a picture :)

My first car was a 1982 XD Ford Falcon station wagon that used to be my Dad's and he gave it to me.
It looked sort of like this:

But in white.

The first car I ever purchased was a green EB Falcon which looked exactly like this one:

Mine was a 1960 something Austin Mini that looked like this Image only it was yellow with a black racing stripe the entire length.

It had the most leg room of any car I have ever owned or even sat in.

Oops... can't believe I didn't say what I got

here is my new baby...

Zach took this photo and sent it to me at work just after he'd washed it, polished a few things up and removed the manky lambswool seat covers, so I could enjoy the moment as much as possible.

a tricked up ( yet to be more so) 323i BMW in the most hideous shade of brown that will be a sparkling hue of turquoise before the year is out. It has a sunroof, brilliant subwoooferrrrrrrs ( said with heavy 'fat pizza' accent) and just needs a few relatively inexpensive things done under the hood and then the cosmetic changes will begin.

Zach and I are currently at loggerheads about a heart shaped muffler... it is a 'girl' car after all

Oh... and she sounds like a BEAST! ( can NOT believe that even matters but anyhoo... the rev head should wear off soon)

Mighty fine choice Lisa. A beemer 323i (you need to say beemer now, not BMW) is a great car. At least you chose the "driver's car". And having a son who is a apprentice mechanic with a European manufacturer is very handy - he will be needed from time to time.

Hehe - the weird thing is, I don't mind its current colour Lisa, but maybe it is worse in real life.

A turquoise spray job will be awesome though.

I have to be upfront here and say I don't like BMWs, but this one is particular attractive - maybe it is because it is a classic.

My first car in 1984 was a 1964 VW Beetle that I named "Indianna" - Indy for short. He cost $400 and drove me back and forth to Bathurst while I studied at uni.

Amusingly I had looked up the front page of the newspaper from the day I was born (1964) and it had a full page picture of beetles racing around Mt Panaroma (I don't know what the race was called then 'The Hardie Ferodo'? I'm sure the petrol heads amongst you will know) - anyway I can assure you that Indy raced around Mt Pan many times with me at the wheel. It was a requirement as a student to do a lap before heading back to campus at the foot of the mountain.

Indy was a fantastic car no heating (what did they do in Germany?), no radio (sang for the 4 hr trip across the Blue Mountains) and no petrol gauge (Dad gave me a stick with markers to put in the tank and measure - needless to say I always ran out of petrol).

The guys at uni thought it was hilarious to regularly move Indy by lifting him and placing him into positions that one could not possible drive out of

Yes Lisa your first car will always have sentimental value and rarely monetary value!

It was 500 and I think it may have been Ferodo or Repco comes to mind for some reason.

But you're right regardless what it was the first car is always the most treasured for many reasons.

When's the pain job Lisa, looking forward to seeing pics of that.

I had to look it up - it was the Armstrong 500 and became the Hardie Ferodo 500 in 1968.

I still call it the Hardie-Ferodo when talking to my Dad - old habits... It hasn't been the HF since 1980!

I love how you had to race the VW around the track on the way to campus :)

First cars are always the coolest.

Oh YEAHHHH! I remember the Hardie Ferodo too...

The paint job happens when I part out my current car that is worth more in parts than as a whole. Just driving it till it runs out of rego and then its on like Donkey Kong... well, the selling and the painting anyway. :)
