Windows Vista

Postby KeithS » Tue Jun 13, 2006 6:49 pm

Yep - this is WAY off topic, thankfully we have a Disney Free section :)

Anyway, I might be off the air for a few days. I've "upgraded" to Windows Vista Beta from Windows XP and have encountered an unusual problem - mainly I have no mouse. Now Vista without a mouse is a bit like Disney without a mouse - it just doesn't work :)

So I'm going to have to rebuild my system from scratch.

So farewell for a couple of days, I'll be watching you guys from work however, so don't get up to any no good!

Now, how many <TABS> do I have to push to get down to the submit button...

Wow - thanks for the warning. I'm a sucker for beta versions but didn't really think anything ever went wrong despite the 20 pages of legalise before you download!

Good luck with the rebuild.

Hey there! I'm back and with a squeaky new clean install of Vista!
I'm a sucker for beta versions
Me too - I'm now running, Vista Beta 2, Office Beta 2007 etc etc...

The problem I encountered appeared to be pretty unusual - I found about 5 other people with the same thing. Basically after installing Vista over XP SP2, everything appeared perfect, except that the mouse pointer wouldn't move. I tried multiple mice (serial, ps2, and usb) and they were all recognised by Vista, but wouldn't move the pointer. The weird thing was, if the screen saver came on and you moved the mouse, the screen would come alive - but the pointer remainder steadfast in the centre of the screen!

Anyway, I did a clean install - my machine needed it anyway as it was long overdue, and things are running nice again.

Vista is pretty cool and I have had no buggy problems with it - but it needs a little optimising before a commercial release. In the end though, I think most people will like it.

I think I may have to build a new PC before I'm game to try Vista. This one is going okay and I'm the type of person who believes "if it aint broke don't fix it".

I'm looking to do a big upgrade next year after Vista is commercially released. I tend to play a lot of games, so I'm looking forward to grabbing a DX10 compatible video card etc to take advantage of the new functionality.

This beta continues to run okay but I have found a few problems with some drivers not working all that well (the Audigy 2 card being a problem with sounds corrupting under certain circumstances).

I've also noted that a few problems I was having have been fixed with the latest Windows Update - so they are already putting through changes to make the experience a little better. Still, Vista is a performance hog...can't wait for them to put through some optimisations...

Oh boy, I deserve that after all the sizzix, jolees and cricut remarks :D

And us PC geeks also have our own special foods, but it doesn't include jelly babies - it mainly involves copious amounts of Coca Cola and Pizza :)

Oh yeah, and you don't throw out the coke cans, you just stack them up on your desk around the PC and on the floor. The pizza boxes also go on the floor until you begin noticing insects living in them - that is the sign to throw stuff out (and of course - start all over again!)

haha

:P

Can somebody please tell me what a windows beta vista is?
Did you re-arrange your computer so that you had a better vista out the window? (yeh.. I know)

I have a computer "techno" guy who helps me out when ever I get into a dilema (which is quite often) and I would love to baffle him with some inside information.

Hey Julie (slipping on my Geek hat now...) Windows Vista is Microsoft's new operating system that will replace Windows XP (which replaced Windows ME, which replaced Windows 98, which replaced Windows 95, which replaced Windows 3.11 etc etc - you get the picture!)

They bring out a new operating system every few years to get more money out of us...errr...allow us to become more productive and simplify the use of technology...

Before they release it for sale in the shops, they release a free pre-release version to the public (in this case, around 2,000,000 free versions). That way, all us people (or suckers) who install it end up helping Microsoft iron out the problems before it goes on sale.

So there you go - in a few months time, you will be hammered by Vista advertising as Microsoft is hoping everybody will buy a copy or two - that means big bucks to them...

(Geek hat now removed - returning to my normal "all the girls like me" mode :) )
