V8 Supercars

Postby KeithS » Sun Feb 24, 2008 9:48 pm

Cool, now with a thread title like that, we are sure to have a chick-free zone for us blokes. Which means we can talk about them behind their backs without being snooped on :D

But firstly, did you watch the first round this weekend in Adelaide? It had a fair share of carnage.

Is it me, or do Ford teams have a serious habit of crashing each other out. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Ford supporter all the way, but I just can't recall too many times when top level Holden teams got in each other's way and damaged championship contenders - yet I seem to think there have been numerous occasions when Ford teams have done just that. Today was no exception - three top cars in one crash...sheesh, the Ford bosses must go crazy!

So, was it Lowndes fault? Courtney's? Or a racing incident??

Yes Ford team do always seem to crash each other out, and always do it at the most inopportune time. And they always have done it. Lowndes at Indy in 2006 when Ingall and Bright took him out, and last year with Jamie. And don't start me on how they treated Ambrose.

But that one today was disgraceful. I think they both can hold their heads in shame, but Courtney should have backed out when Lowndes was starting to pass, but the way he attacked that corner was not necessary either. But Courtney wasn't the only one, Frosty also made a rod for his own back at the same corner a couple of laps earlier when he pushed Lowndes onto the dirty line and then forced himself wide into the corner, in the process losing 3 spots. If both Frosty and Courtney had let Lowndes pass on both occasions, they would both have been in top 5, and Lowndes was then the only one taking a risk.

The Ford bosses need to give them all a swift kick up the rear spoiler and tell them to pull their heads in. I don't want to see the level of support like the Holden boys gave HSVDT the last 2 years that was blatant cheating, but fair dinkum, they should leave each other alone at least.

Aside from all that I had nominated Jamie Whincupp ,as my man this year to win the championship prior to the season, so he's off to a great start. And what about the effort from Gizzy in the 9 car of SBR? One thing is for certain, with the Stones, FPR, 888 and DJR all on the pace, the Holden teams should be looking a little concerned at this early stage of the season.

Hehe - I was reading Anthony's post - nodding along in agreement and understanding it all the way - then I read your comment above and laughed out loud! Yes Lisa, plain (guy) English!

I'll respond in more detail tonight Anthony, I'm watching the Oscar results - err...I mean I am working hard at the office, at the moment!

Just depends... are you using your 'World Domination-Zurg' voice or lapsing into Mini Me squeak? Might make all the difference.
Yes Lisa, plain (guy) English!
OOooh..... along the lines of 'grunt... beer.... grunt.... remote... grunt.... V8 Supercars' ? Isn't that 'guy English'? Or is there subcategories like "bloke English" and "Snag English"? :D

Don't panic, I'll probably bounce back to the scrapping section before long.....

Jamie Whincupp ,as my man this year
Me too - I've got a lot of time for him - he is quick and keeps his nose clean during the race - Courtney obviously has some speed, but by the end of the race (if he finishes) his car is dented, bashed, covered in mud from his offs, with the steering deranged! He needs to learn not to try and win in the first corner and let the race come to him.

In other news, I'm glad the two US open-wheeler series are finally burying the hatchet (and not in each other) and merging. That has been a blight on motor racing for too long - it destroyed a great institution (Indy 500) and gave Nascar ALL the motor racing sponsorship money in the US - when in the late 80s early 90s, most of the big sponsors went Indycar Racing. It'll take a while to build back the fan support, but I'm hopeful.

To bring civility back to the discussion Keith , your points made about Courtney are spot on. He does get too impatient too quick. It makes one wonder if Ross and Jimmy are starting to put some pressure on him for results. He clearly has the car speed and he has shown his ability to pilot it around a track, but his brain explosions are his undoing.

The "new" Indy car league will be a new dawn for the sport. Indycar used to be one the stepping stones into F1 once upon a time, so here's their opportunity to work towards getting it back up there. But your point on sponsorship is valid. All 3 NASCAR levels have seen an influx of money which would have been some Indy/Champ car money originally. For me the the real positive is now seeing 2 high class Australian talent duking it out for the championship. Money would be on Brisco, but only just.

The downside is the risk that Indy on the Gold Coast could become a non championship round, which may detract a little from the spectacle, but they'll still come because it's one the premier races.

Speaking of F1, I get the Mark Webber email news and it sounds as though the RB cars will be holding together more this year, the reliability in testing has been better and the speed has been up there too. but those Red cars will again be hard to beat by the sound of it!

The California round of NASCAR finally got underway after a few days rain, and it was a bit on a non event. What about Bush leading Trucks and Cup and being 2nd in Nationwide? He's had a great start. Marcos had a bit of a shocker today, but hopefully they're just settling in.

Not happy with how many Holdens are up front after qualifying, but let's hope they get an attack of the "Fords" and take each other out!

The results weren't too bad yesterday, with second and third going to Ford.

I didn't get to see any of the racing - I was out all day, but I'll be tuning in to race 2 & 3 this afternoon.

After the first couple of laps, it just became a procession. Which Eastern Creek tends to do to a race. Will Davidson had a great start and Lowndes also drove a good strategic race to gain a few spots, but that's about the highlights really. I think today will bring a little more excitement and hopefully better results. But Garth was quick, so let's hope they lock a wheelnut in the pits or something.

Ford 1,2,3,5 in Race two - nice job Will :) But again, a fairly lacklustre race - except for a few wheel to wheel clashes further back - good job by all drivers to stay on the road in those - maybe the stewards had a quiet word after Adelaide!
