I was sad to hear about the passing of Michael Crichton today. He is one of a few authors that I read every book from. I discovered his work after first seeing The Andromeda Strain movie on TV when I was about ten. I loved the technology feel of the film and immediately borrowed the book from the local library - and was totally hooked. I think it was the first adult novel I ever read.
Of course, Crichton just didn't write books, he also directed movies including the great classic sci-fi film - Westworld with Yul Brynner, and B-Grade medical film "Coma" with a young Michael Douglas (based on the novel by Robin Cook). He also wrote and directed the pilot episode of ER - which I still regard as one of the best TV-pilots ever.
Most non-fans know him for the author of Jurassic Park, but there are other great novels (some of which were made into not-so-great films) including Congo, The Terminal Man, Prey, The Lost World, Timeline, Disclosure, and Rising Sun.
If you haven't read any of these books, I highly recommend you track them down (especially if you are geeky-nerdy...)
