My current bookage is 'women,food,god'... kind of confronting and yet fascinating... saw it on Oprah on a rare 'watching TV in the middle of the day' kind of moment... went straight down to the book store and bought it that day... never done that in my life.

Beth, I'm about 200 pages into Cross stitch and LOVING it. Only started reading it on Friday and 200 pages in with my boys is quite a feat, so it gives you an indication of how much I'm enjoying it. Of course, the house is a pig sty, but who cares?!?!

 Gee I wish I'd known that, I would have liked to have seen in him the flesh (even on TV), even if he would have been 270 odd years old

After much hype, I received the latest book from Diana Gabaldon (Outlander series) - The Exile. I have had it on order for months waiting for the release in September and it finally arrived yesterday.

Now this book is a 'graphic novel' and I suspect there's 1 or 2 blokes out there who nod their head and say ah! While I am left scratching my head. I don't know what I was expecting but not a manga version of Jamie Fraser - sacrilege!

I remember as a kid grabbing the comic/crossword page of my father's newspaper and reading the few comic strips I was interested in: Andy Capp, Hagar the Horrible, The Wizard of Id - usually amusing and a story within each strip. I ignored Brenda Starr and other continuing sagas as I didn't enjoy the illustrations, it was not amusing and seemed too adult. Well this is what The Exile is. I can't tell what is happening in the drawings and they summarise an entire chapter in a few "Ughs" "Fwumps" & "Kraks"?????

Not my cup a tea and quite a surprise given that I assume the fan-base for for this series is women who like historical romance/adventures.

The Wizard of Id
Oh - how I loved The Wizard of Id!!!

As for these "graphic novels" - I just don't get them - I see them as glorified comics that they've tried to make more adult so you don't look nerdy reading them - well guess what, only nerds read them! Then they discuss them in great depth as if they are works of Shakespeare, and anyone who doesn't get it are seen to be lower class citizens :D It's true - I know a few of these people!

Give me a good novel without the pictures any day - let my imagination do the work for me :)

I kept a wizard of id strip for years that just cracked me up. The character who hsf everything bad happen to him was standing by the water when a large fish jumped up and swallowed him. After much thrashing around the fish spat him out and dripping he says well that was pretty disgusting! Perhaps not as amusing in the re-telling.

Yes Greg - It sounds like I need some enlightening!

One thing I will say in their favour is that the artwork in some cases is amazing.

A graphic novel is just a fancy way of saying comic.

Anyone seen Sin City or 300?

See - that's what I said, but the people I know who read them say they aren't comics - they tend to intellectualise the genre into something that is much more.

I think the bustiness of all the female characters challenges the credibility of their intellectualism!
