What to see in 2008

Postby KeithS » Thu Jan 03, 2008 1:16 pm

Hey there everyone. What movies are you going to see this year? Here is my list, in no particular order, of what I want to go and see...

Wall-E - Pixar's latest - have to see that.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - It's Indy...
Narnia: Prince Caspian - The first movie was alright, this looks better.
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince - no need to comment :)
Valkyrie - I'm not a Tom Cruise fan, but as a history fan, I like this true story of the attempt to bump off Adolf Hitler in WW2.
Get Smart - This is my dumb comedy pick of the year, can't wait!
Angels & Demons - This prequel was a better book than Da Vinci Code, hopefully the movie will be better too!
James Bond 22 - no need for introduction, we all know who he is.
The Dark Knight - sequel to Batman Returns, the best Batman movie ever.
Star Trek - this has me excited (no, I'm not a Star Trek nerd - in fact, the traditionalists will probably hate this.) This movie goes back to the very beginning, when Kirk, Spock, Chekov etc first joined the Enterprise.

So this is just some of the big movies I'll try and see - got any other favourites?
Keith

Wall-E ...yep
Indiana Jones 4 ..... its Indy
Narnia - can't wait for this one
Harry.... Hell Yeah :!:
Valkerie - maybe
Get Smart - would you believe... yep?
Golden Compass ( soon...nearly finished the first book)
Atonement (this one sounds fascinating)
Mr Magoriums Wonder Emporium ( Millie wants to see it )
PS: I Love You ( although this comes with a two box of Kleenex warning so that might be a bit traumatic yet)
The other Boleyn Girl ( as in Anne Boleyn)
Fanboys ( maybe)
Horton hears a Who? ( another Dr. Seuss book)

DVD's I've been told I must watch:
Paris: Je'Taime ( apparently not for the 'blow things up' types- its a collection of 5 minute mini movies made by famous directors, that is fascinating- this one is a bit out there but appeals)
Evening... apparently a great chick flick.

and probably heaps more... what can I say... I love movies.

Golden Compass ( soon...nearly finished the first book)
I read this series in anticipation of the movie (in fact, I finished book three while sitting at my desk at work yesterday :P ) I'm won't say anything about them until you finish though Lisa, other than I liked them!

However, as for the film, I'm reading very disturbing reports from the fans - apparently they cut the last couple of chapters of book 1 from the ending, and you'll know the significance when you get there... :( Apparently they filmed and produced the whole book, so I guess we will get a special edition DVD at some stage in the future...

And with the poor box office (hampered by bad reviews - especially in light of the ending), it is unlikely that they will now film the other two movies, which is a shame because it could have made a good franchise.

OK, I can cross a couple of movies off my list now.

I saw The Golden Compass on the weekend and despite all the bad reviews, loved it! And nope, I haven't finished the book yet ( in fact, I haven't picked it up since I wrote the last post about movies) but I think that might have been the saving grace. Because I didn't know what was going to happen, the movie was just an enjoyable fantasy.
My daughter on the other hand, came out grumpy because it wasn't at all like the book and apparently chapters had been 'swapped' around in the movie which she then found a little annoying.

The ending is very open ended so the presumption is that there will be more but from what you were saying Keith, that might not happen which would be a shame cos it was very entertaining. I'm not a huge Nicole Kidman fan but I thought her role in this was perfect. And I loved the CG polar bears...
I think this is a movie best seen on a big screen or you lose some of the 'hugeness' ( for want of a better word :)) of the scenery.

I also saw Pans Labyrinth recently and loved that too - Spanish subtitles and all. (for those that haven't seen it, its a gothic -rather violent in places- twist on Alice in Wonderland type tale).

Next is 'Atonement'.

I saw The Golden Compass on the weekend and despite all the bad reviews, loved it!
Della and I went as well, we both really enjoyed it too! I didn't mind the missing ending, and Della - who hasn't read the book - thought it was great and was really disappointed that she wouldn't see what happened next without the final two films.

I thought it followed the book pretty closely - you can never get everything exactly the same as the book - just take a look at the Harry Potter films.

Not a bad piece of fantasy film making - I give it a 7.5 / 10.

As it is the last day of 2008 - I thought I'd resurrect this thread as a retrospective of my 2008 movie want to sees.

Here is my original list with new comments:

Wall-E - Probably the best movie of 2008 - a close tie with The Dark Knight
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - It's Indy - but not quite as engaging as the previous ones. I watched it again on DVD this week and it was better the second time around.
Narnia: Prince Caspian - Better than the first film - I'll watch the DVD on New Year's Day I think for a second opinion.
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince - Delayed to 2009 :(
Valkyrie - Delayed to 2009 :( (although the reviews are fairly mediocre - however I'll judge for myself - it may be a DVD movie for me rather than the cinema.)
Get Smart - I never ended up seeing it - not even on DVD!
Angels & Demons - Delayed to 2009 :( Still highly anticipated.
James Bond 22 - Good action sequel to the previous Bond - even Della liked this one (but make sure you watch Casino Royale immediately beforehand)
The Dark Knight - Probably the best movie of 2008 - a close tie with Wall-E
Star Trek - Delayed to 2009 :( Still highly anticipated!

So, that was my list of what I wanted to see. Many of them were delayed this year - probably because of the writers strike etc.

The two stand outs were Dark Knight and Wall-E.

Others I got to see included: Mamma Mia, HSM3, Beverly Hills Chihuahua, Deception, and Vantage Point.

Bring on 2009!

This is an area of my life where the brain cells are not sufficient to lay down the memory tracks, I think there is only so much one brain can hold and you need to be selective in what you will keep and what you will discard and unfortunately I am well aware that over the course of my life this is the area that gets discarded. So to ask me what did I see and what did I like is not likely to get an accurate response. I do recall seeing Wall-E on the cruise - loved it, I know I saw a few movies on the plane but now I can't recall which ones and whether I liked them - oh I remember seeing Sex and the City however I don't remember whether I liked it or not. I think I saw James Bond for the second time on the plane too and it is growing on me. I also have trouble remembering who I saw movies with - what is my problem? May be this will be my New Years resolution to remember all the movies I see - but what will I discard to make room? Maybe the names of my children - need more space - my husbands annoying habits now that will clear some room and make life far more pleasant!

Hmmm - seems like a good time of the year to resurrect a fun topic.

So what films did you get to see in 2010 and what were your favourites?

Let me see - here are the movies that I saw at the cinema
(with thanks to this website for reminding me of the monthly releases! http://thecia.com.au/film/2010-01.shtml):

Princess and the Frog - a good traditionally animated film, but it was no Beauty, Mermaid, Aladdin, or Lion King.
Avatar - an amazing spectacle and not a bad film - we've discussed this one to death though :)
Toy Story 1 & 2 3D - yep, we saw them again in their two-week release in 3D early this year. No need to comment on them!
Valentine's Day - hmmm, I was coerced into just one chick-flick this year - must be a record for me!
Alice in Wonderland - still not sure if I liked it. Maybe I should watch the bluray that I bought.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time - not as strong as the PotC films, but I enjoyed it!
The A-Team - this is my pick for the brainless fun film of the year! Helicopters, explosions, car chases and gunfights - and that was all before the opening credits!
Toy Story 3 - excellent film and I'd have to say my film of the year...
Beauty and the Beast 3D - ...this is a close second for film of the year - sure, it was made in 1991, but it is still brilliant - even with the 3D conversion!
The Sorcerer's Apprentice - this is the film that punched above my expectations (which were virtually none) - I came out of the cinema thoroughly entertained.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One - a good film but suffers in that it is only the first half of a bigger story - I can't wait for Part Two!

I'd like to see Tron and Narnia before the year is out too - but I'm not sure if I'll get the chance - I might have to put them in my 2011 list!

Talking of 2011, here are the movies that I'm excited about - not a big list unfortunately:
Tangled - can't wait for this!
Cars 2: World Grand Prix
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two
Justin Bieber: Never Say Never (just kidding!)
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

So, how about you folks? Any good movies this year that you'd care to tell us about? And what about 2011 - surely there must be more films than what I mention here?

Well, it is now 2012, so I thought I'd check in on the movies I saw this year and what I'm looking forward to next year.

These are the films that I saw at the cinema in 2011:
Tangled - this exceeded my expectations and in probably my favourite film in 2011.
Gnomeo and Juliet - this was okay, but underwhelming - not one to add to my collection.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - a bit better than the previous two, but I think there is plenty of room for improvement! On the plus side, I got to see it at the El Capitan in Hollywood and it did have mermaids :)
Super 8 - I really enjoyed this film and it was especially nostalgic for those of us growing up in the '70s and '80s
Cars 2 - I really need to watch this again, but it really doesn't stick out in the ranks of Pixar greats does it? More Dreamworks than Pixar I think...
Transformers 3: Dark Side of the Moon - great special effects, but the 'story' was tooooooooooo long...
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two - This is my live action movie of the year, followed by Super 8. A nice way to finish the series.

There were heaps of movies I missed at the cinema this year due to other commitments such as Captain America, Thor, Rise of the Planet of the Apes - I have these on Bluray now but I only rate my cinema viewings.

So what about 2012? Here are the releases I'm most looking forward to:
The Muppets - it has everything going for it, including Amy Adams :)
The Avengers - I need a superhero fix every now and then, and this is an ensemble which is fabulous. More interesting than the Spiderman reboot.
Men in Black 3 - the MiBs are is a guilty pleasure of mine - I hope they don't let me down.
Brave - this looks to be a Pixar classic, I cannot wait.
The Dark Knight Rises - the conclusion to Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy. This will be terrific.
Skyfall - James Bond returns - woohoo!

Over to you folks!
Keith

I saw so few movies at the cinema this year its almost embarrassing.

I saw: Tangled - Definitely my fav Disney offering for the year.

Pirates of the Caribbean
- On Stranger Tides - Loved it.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Like Keith, my movie of the year.

I saw most of my movies on DVD this year... Thor- good as superhero movies go ; Rise of the Planet of the Apes - surprisingly good; Hall Pass - a definite DVD only movie; and a gazillion more ( I might have had a friend come home from an Asian country with quite a swag of great titles)...

And I'm embarrassed to say, that I still haven't watched Cars 2 or Breaking Dawn part 1

in 2012 I'm looking forward to:

* Hugo
* Hobbit - CANT WAIT FOR THIS!!!!
* Snow White and the Huntsman
* Sherlock Holmes 2
* Breaking Dawn part 2 ( will probably catch the double feature when the second one comes out)
* Wrath of the Titans - love these 'Grecian god' movies.
* The Muppets
* Chipwrecked ( sorry but I am a major fan of those little squeaky characters)
* Brave - this is my most anticipated movie ... -/

I plan to see a lot more movies at the cinema this year than last.

Me too!!!

I missed it off my list as they haven't announced an Australian release date yet, but it will be before New Year, so it is definitely in my list - and is also the most anticipated movie for me. I can't wait!

I am looking forward to Brave and The Hobbit too. The big question is though do I crack out the LOTR extended editions to get me in Middle Earth mode BEFORE seeing The Hobbit, or wait til after seeing it to continue on with the story?

I say watch them before - because The Hobbit is in two parts, so you might as well re-watch LOTR when you can because it'll be nearly another two years (Dec 2013) by the time the final movie is out - at which point you can watch the LOTR movies again :)

That might be why I haven't seen any of the LOTR yet, because I'm waiting for the hobbit ( I know ...)

As for the topic, I can't remember what I did last month let alone for the year. But I do know I didn't see too much at the movies, just the main events that you have already mentioned.
2023 Disneyland, Walt Disney World, Disney Cruise Lines - Disney Wish. Going to be awesome to be back!
