Hong Kong Disneyland - The Story So Far

Postby KeithS » Sun Sep 11, 2005 10:34 am

Just to let you all know in case you haven't seen today's television guide, Channel 7 in Sydney (and I'm guessing the rest of the country) is showing a special at 3pm this afternoon titled "Hong Kong Disneyland - The Story So Far".

So, if you can tear yourselves away from the Sandown 500 V8s race, or the football finals on the other channels (haha) be sure to check it out - or at least record it like I'm doing :D

Catch you all later,

I missed the show (don't watch much free-to-air, I'm addicted to Austar) and should check this forum a little more regularly because I missed your post as well.

Luckily GoldCoastGuy (a silent member of the forum) recorded it and gave me a DVD of it unexpectedly at work this morning. Thanks Evan.

Let me know what you think of the program. For a publicity piece, I thought it wasn't too bad.

It showed a lot without specifically showing all the rides - it gave a good feel for what was there.

Wayne will be returning from his trip soon to the Hong Kong opening, so I'm hoping to convince him to write a short piece for the website.

I'm especially interested to hear his thoughts on crowd behaviour etc :) because that is going to determine where I go next March - either Hong Kong or return to Anaheim.

It was a typically Disney fluff piece, an advertisement for the park disguised as a TV show but I guess that they really didn't have much to show when they made it, which may explain why there wasn't too much detail.

It certainly gave a taste of the park but then it wouldn't have taken much to get me salivating and checking my bank balance. :)

Great Outdoors on Seven this Monday will show the opening.

I've just got off the phone with Wayne. He was really impressed with the park - one of Disney's best! He has sold me on going next year :)

I wont steal his thunder - I'll let him explain it all in his own words when he gets the time. I'm really looking forward to next weekend's Disneyana meeting now.

I hope you can talk him into writing a trip report because I'd like to hear about it as well.

Did anybody read the article in the Sydney morning Herald last Sat on Hong Kong Disneyland? Here are a few quotes to give you the general idea.

"All that money, all that hype, all those road signs that now carry the three circle emblem next to the internationally recognised airport symbol for three paltry worlds! Actually there are four if you count Main street USA but because it is just a kitsch collection of fake olde worlde shops we didn't"

And Lisa....

Jawdropping queues for character photos except for one forlorn Chinese dragon that nobody wanted to be photographed with

And ...saving the best for last

"And since when has Disney ever been about substance anyway"

Gee she soulds like a fun gal, hope that she's coming on our trip with us!

" who spit in her bean curd?"

I bet everyone's lining up to go on holidays with her......

Actually, I feel sorry for her, thats just sad that she couldn't even have fun in the "Happiest place on Earth".......

I never read that article, but someone at work mentioned it to me. I guess she is one of those people who just don't "get it".

She can't have been at the same Disneyland as I was - the character lines were tiny when I was there :)

And Mushu was awesome Lisa - don't fret!

I do feel sorry for the Hong Kong park - no one writes articles in the paper about how good it is - they get thousands of happy visitors everyday, yet one unhappy person every so often gets their article published in a newspaper and it makes it sound as if the park is a failure.

It is no Anaheim and doesn't pretend to be (it is almost half the cost to get in!), but what is there is great and it will get better over the years - I'm looking forward to September and my second visit there in 5 months.

I updated my Hong Kong DL photo album with a couple of Mushu pictures (I haven't put any Princess ones up!)

Speaking of photo albums, Della and I decided we would try and cull our 500 or HK photos down to 200 to put in an album yesterday...the first 100 or so were easy, but a couple of hours later and we are still at over 300! I hate having to cull pictures that are really good!

Why cull? I came back from my last US trip - whoops second last! with just over 3,500 photos. They fill six scrapbook albums but I'd rather be able to look at them all.

GREAT SHOTS .......:D

I think HKDL will have to be the next park for me. I was leaning towards Paris but how could I resist MUSHU?

Plus I like the idea of being able to watch the fireworks out my window....

And I agree with Sandie, why cull? Put them all on - Princesses and all :D

So Wayne, if you're reading this...how about a club trip to Hong Kong or who can we talk to about arranging it?
