Anyone altering plans to visit Hong Kong considering the latest news from there?

I always have a visit to Hong Kong in the back of my mind, cheap and easy from here, but I'm thinking that now might not be the best time to go.

We love going to Hong Kong - like you, it is easy to get to, and the time zone difference and cheap flights make it a good destination.

If I was planning, then I don't think I'd cancel - I'd probably just stick to the resort and not go into the City.  We have annual passes so we were thinking of potentially heading up there early in the new year.  If there is a cheap flight deal, we might just do that.

I had the same idea of just sticking to the resort but I'm reading of disruptions at the airport, air traffic control on strike etc, and flights being cancelled.

My sister and I are keeping an eye on the reports, however our trip isn't until mid-January so we're in hope things calm down.  We were only planning one day in the city so we'd just stay at the resort instead.  I did hear some flights have been cancelled during the tensions, I guess I'll just wait and see for my trip.  Still 5 months away.

Fingers crossed for you, and for Hong Kong as a whole.

We are definitely thinking of going in the new year - maybe March for a week.  They were shooting tear gas around Wan Chai and the Kowloon shopping area yesterday, so that's not good - we love visiting both those areas :(

Yes it's freaky seeing places I've walked around that are now looking like war-zones.

And now the airport is at a standstill - I don't think we'll be booking anytime soon...

My thoughts exactly. Maybe a quick trip to Tokyo instead.

May be seeing some discounted Disney hotel room prices soon though.

My trip to China is now less than 3 weeks away.  With tensions settling at times, we'd decided to go into the city for a few hours on a week day however it appears there's often train line changes and closures with people creating disturbances or throwing things on the tracks.  We'll now be staying at the resort for all 5 days.

Seems crowds are down so that will be good. There's also been reviews that not all food places are opening due to lower crowds, however I'm not concerned as there will still be plenty of options.  We'll try out any of the activities at the hotels they let adults participate in.  Annual passes here we come!

I'll be very interested to hear how it is. Are you going to be there for Chinese New Year?

Yes, we'll be in Shanghai for Chinese New Year.  It's going into Year of the Rat which is my year so I've been planning this for a couple of years.  We know it'll be crazy busy but we'll have at least 4 days in each park (2 days during the week away from the holidays) so that should allow us time to do everything.  Initially I thought Hong Kong over the actual holiday would be better crowd wise however without the castle there's no fireworks and it didn't seem right to be in China for Chinese New Year and not have fireworks so I switched it around.  It's hard to get my head around packing for 1-8 degrees!

Shanghai would be cool for the fireworks. I imagine the ones over the harbour will be spectacular, China doesn't seem to do anything by halves these days.
