Changes to Tokyo Disney entertainment

Postby KeithS » Sat Apr 12, 2014 9:01 am

I don't know how I missed this but I just found out that the wonderful Legend of Mythica at Tokyo Disneysea will perform for the last time on 7 September this year. There has been no announcement about a replacement at this time. I really hope they produce another spectacular water parade like Mythica which was one of the best Disney shows I have ever seen.

In other news, Tokyo Disneyland will introduce "Once Upon a Time" a 15 minute castle projection show for Cinderella's castle - similar to Celebrate the Magic in Orlando.

Unfortunately, it would appear that the Oriental Land Company is cutting down on the major shows and spectacles at the Tokyo Disney Resort. They've cancelled a lot of the big season stage productions such as Bonfire Dance, Spring Voyage/Primavera, the Disneysea Halloween stageshow, and others. There will also be no night time stage shows in Disneyland any more with the introduction of the castle projection and now Mythica is getting the axe. Only Fantasmic remains as a nighttime extravaganza. This is sad in my opinion as the Tokyo entertainment offerings really put them ahead of the US parks.

I hope at some point in the future this turns around (although I imagine these are very expensive to run, whereas projection shows are much cheaper and cost little in cast member salaries!)

Oh wow... can't believe they're cutting so many shows.

So glad I've seen Mythica - I agree Keith, def one of the best shows I've seen at a Disney park. I wouldn't have thought making enough money could possibly be the issue, given how the Japanese shop and how very many attend the parks. I'm surprised by that.

I'm surprised by that.
And last year was a record for attendance too - so I don't get the cutbacks. They have spent a lot on new attractions like Toy Story Mania and Star Tours 2 which has brought in a lot of visitors, so maybe their strategy will be continuous attraction improvements rather than seasonal entertainment offerings? I'm not really sure.

I do like the quality of their attractions, but I would miss the seasonal offerings, because they are so different to everywhere else. Its a special part of what makes the Tokyo parks unique I think.
