Tokyo Expansion? Third Park?

Postby KeithS » Thu Nov 30, 2017 8:05 am

Hmmm - there are lots of rumour going around the internet this morning in relation to the expansion of the Tokyo Disney Resort.

Some say there will be a third park built by 2025: https://nerdist.com/new-disney-theme-park-tokyo/

While others say it is an expansion of the existing parks: https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Companies/Tokyo-Disney-eyes-biggest-expansion-in-nearly-20-years

Either way - it looks like we are in for some exciting announcements in the next 12 months.  The Tokyo parks are probably the best Disney parks out there - so any major expansion will be great news - they just do everything so well in those parks.

This would be cool!

Would they be likely to go for a Japanese theme (California Adventures in California) or stick to a generic/american theme? I guess that Japanese visitors (their biggest demographic I assume) would prefer something foreign.

I read somewhere they were thinking of making it Japan-themed to help attract more foreign tourists.  The current parks of definitely targeted at locals at the moment.  I guess we'll just have to wait until next year sometime to find out what is planned.

My first thought is that this would be a good thing but now I'm not so sure. Do I want to go to Disneyland to see a Disneyfied version of Japanese culture when it exists just outside of the Park in reality?

yep, this is being debated all over the place at the moment... but has there been any official announcement about any of it yet?

Personally,  I'm not sure what I think about it... a third gate would be amazing, but I tend to agree that being Japanese themed would be a little redundant because you can get that literally everywhere in Japan.  I think I'd prefer the 'real Japan' rather than a Disneyfied one.
If they did something based on other Disney IP that isn't anywhere else ( kind of like Universal with Mario) say with Marvel or perhaps another version of epcot with lots of other cultural offerings, then I would be the first in line.  Perhaps an Epcot version with all different kinds of Asian 'lands' to show the diversity that is often lumped under the one umbrella?
1999- Tokyo DL, 2008- DLR/Cal Adventure, 2012-DLR/Cal Adventure, 2013-Tokyo DLand/Sea, 2014-DLR/Cal Adventure, 2015- Paris DL, 2016 - WDW/Disneycruise , upcoming - May 2018 - HongKong DL

Now that's a really interesting idea. The competition between different Asian countries to show off would guarantee some spectacular pavilions and it's close enough to be economically feasible for smaller countries. It would possibly get closer to Walt's vision of Epcot with places like South Korea and Japan competing to show off their latest and greatest.

This weekend the Japanese D23 Expo is on in Tokyo and there is to be a big Parks and Resorts announcement from there on Sunday evening US time (some time Monday afternoon for us).  It'll be interesting to see and hear what this presentation is going to unveil.  The official Disney Parks Blog will be covering the announcements so get ready for it :)
