Frustration

Postby calisota » Sat Apr 28, 2007 4:06 am

Hi guys,

As the subject says, I'm sitting here at the moment a little frustrated. Now before any of you get entirely the wrong idea, it is a Disney related frustration. :)

For those that may not know, I am now working for Carnival Cruise Lines as casino cashier. This means poor wages but free travel. The reason I'm frustrated is that I am sitting in my hotel suite right now in Miami, a mere stones throw (kind of) from Walt Disney World and I have the whole of tomorrow off! I am being transferred from one ship to another and I am being put up here between getting off one and getting on the next one. I have never been to WDW and it is so frustrating being this close and not being able to go!

I've been looking at ways that I might get there but flying is too expensive, the bus takes too long (6 hours there is just not enough) and walking is just not a viable method. In fact the girl at reception actually laughed when I said I was walking down the road to the mall.

There are even brochures in the lobby!

By the way, there was a Disney store in the mall and it was as disappointing as the ones in Australia were at the end.

Hi Greg, it is great to hear from you. Does the change of ships mean you get different ports of call? Different cruise lengths? Different mix of customers?

Sorry to hear you cannot make it up to Orlando - although you might be more frustrated by going for just one day than not going at all - especially when there is so much there to see :) I guess for the time being you'll have to satisfy yourself with reading the brochures until you can get some more time off!

Enjoy your day in Miami and we look forward to updates as you get the chance.

How was your first couple of cruises? Did you get any time ashore in Nassau or Mexico?

Catch you again soon.
Keith

Yep, a change of ship does mean a change of ports. In fact I am changing cruise lines completely from Carnival to Princess. They are both owned by Carnival Corp. and the casino is the only division that can transfer you between lines. I've gone from the Port of Miami as my home port to Port Everglades and I'll be getting on the Caribbean Princess. It's still in the Caribbean but different ports and longer cruises, 7 or 14 days compared to 3 or 4 so less of a booze cruise than the first ship. Hopefully a different type of passenger who tips more.

I looked at the bus trip to WDW but the reality was that it was a 6 hour trip there, 6 hours in the park and then 6 hours back. That would have been next to useless and a waste of money. Apparently while I'm on board I can apply for a special visa that will let me stay in the country for a vacation (I'm on a special "transit" one at the moment) when my contract ends so if the money allows I may look at spending 10 days in Orlando before I come home. 6 months from now I may be in WDW! :D

Princess cruises sound much nicer :D hehe.

You'll probably get a wealthier crowd (as opposed to the booze cruises) so I hope your tips go up! You'll need to save $$ for that Orlando trip - 10 days is a nice length of time there, so I hope you pull it off.

Keep the updates coming and we'll catch you soon.

Hi Greg, have you thought of stopping in at Central Casting and seeing if you can get a WDW job?

Wouldn't I need a green card to be able to do that?

I have heard that in some cases they have helped with this - not a green card but a work visa. I have spoken to Australians working in both EPCOT and the MK.

Can't hurt to email or call them!
