Disney Park for Sydney?

Postby KeithS » Sun Mar 25, 2007 7:52 am

Our friends over at The Laughing Place have an interesting article online today. Titled "Pardon our dust: Future Park", it talks about Disney's plans for future exapnsion.

I highly recommend you all head over to read it:

http://www.laughingplace.com/News-ID511300.asp

It suggests that Disney have now overlooked Shanghai, Seoul and Singapore for developments in the Asia-Pacific region, in favour of developing a smaller style resort in Sydney...yep, you heard me right :D

So, click the link above and get reading!

I'm very excited at the prospect of this and have already discussed with the wife the need to sell our house and buy a unit if it does happen, because we'll have no time to do lawn work or gardening!

But to keep it real, we'll need to take this news with a grain of salt at present as it is only discussions, and there are many things that will need to be considered before it becomes a reality. Also, I hope they do consider more than just a themed water park. It would dilute the overall effect if they don't. At least a downtown or something, or a mini magic kingdom.

However, we do keep hoping, and because we are true Disney nuts, we all "Believe. Dreams do come true!"

Hehe - I saw you were online when I was posting my message :) and yes, I remembered to breathe...

Anthony's right about the 'grain of salt'. We have seen things like this before - including the alleged Disney visit to Geelong at the request of transport baron Lindsay Fox back in 2005. Fox owns Avalon airport, and it was rumoured he was wining and dining Disney to build a theme park in Geelong so that he'd get increased traffic through Avalon (just as he got Jetstar to fly there). Of course - that is the most cold and windswept piece of land on the planet (I should know - I used to work at the airshows there!)

Anyway, does anybody know someone in NSW Department of Lands? :) or some other Govt department? They are the ones who'd know!

I don't work there but as a dedicated member of the Open Space team of a Council bordering the Western Sydney Greenbelt I can tell you that a portion of that land is zoned as being suitable for a theme park, however it is not a large plot - about the size of the Wonderland site - and no it is not the wonderland site.

I found the press release from 2005 - it was 30 hectares or 74.1 acres - which is exactly the same size as the Disneyland Park which is 74.2 (although the whole original site was 160 acres including car park area etc.)

Given that car parks and transport hub and hotel/s would have to be built, we could imagine a park half the size of Disneyland in Anaheim - but that would still be a sizable park which could be filled with decent attractions.

Oh well, I'm just continuing my dream :)

Something caught my eye yesterday in an article released on Laughing Place. The article is an interesting read on the moves by the US to encourage tourism and to be more tourist friendly. Here it is for a good read http://www.orlandosentinel.com/business ... 8472.story

What caught my eye was a comment by the Disney Parks boss. In discussing the competitive tourist nations he refers to Australia. Now I did some reading between the lines and came up with a theory. If he mentions Australia as a popular and easy tourist destination, does that mean that Australia is in the minds of Disney Execs? If so then this original topic of a park in Australia, would be more than a rumour, but would be under some serious consideration with the bean counters and decision makers.
