D23 International Memberships

Postby KeithS » Mon Aug 20, 2018 8:49 am

Did any D23 members get the email this week stating that they were no longer going to accept international memberships?

I find the whole situation very strange - it all began a few weeks ago when they stopped sending out the weekend D23 Fanfare email to international members.  I said to Della at the time it must be a licensing issue because there is no real expense in sending out the emails.

And now we've been told the international memberships are to be stopped.  They say in their email that they are trying to find a solution to allow international memberships again in future - so to me that sounds like this is a legal issue rather than them just wanting to service their US customers.  It all seems very weird...

I also just read on another site that people in Canada have received the same email - so it is definitely all international guests.  I guess we'll have to watch this space.

I guess you can still sign up to the free "general membership" and get the email but it certainly sounds like a legal thing. Curiouser and curiouser. Did they offer any refund for un-used membership?

And today we got an apology email from the head of D23 saying they had resolved the issue!

Apparently some changes to international privacy laws had caused the halting of memberships (I'm guessing it is to do with the European law changes - which is why so many websites ask us about accepting cookies these days).

Anyway - to compensate us for the inconvenience, the email states they will extend our memberships by 12 months!  Which is a pretty great offer on their behalf - they email us again later to let us know the details once it is worked out.

Well done D23.

Damn, that is impressive. A good return for something that really didn't cause you any inconvenience.

Today I got my email from D23 to state my annual membership had been renewed - so they were good to their word that they would provide us a year's free membership.  And that includes them sending out the annual gift (which this year is a very impressive 10th anniversary of D23 pin set!)

So thank you to D23 - we've often maligned the organisation over things such as international postage rates, lack of benefits for international members etc - but a whole year's free subscription and annual gift is very generous.

Wow, that's excellent work from them. It's the sort of thing that will keep you a member.
