Alligator takes a 2yr old at WDW

This is so sad and scary (as we have a 2 year old!). The outdoor movies always look to appealing, I'm not sure if I'd do it now.

This is horrible. The last place you would ever imagine something like this happening. I wonder what precautions are in place where it happened and in the Resort as a whole.

More terrible news out of Orlando.

I have heard in the past that Disney move large alligators out if they see them in the resort area. We've seen small ones (two foot) in the waters at Animal Kingdom before.

It is just incredibly bad luck one would come up on the beach at the Grand Floridian during the nightly movie. That poor family...

It's so sad. I'm yet to visit WDW so not sure on the set up, but updated stories say they were at the waters edge when it grabbed the boy. 4 hours have passed so it's not looking good. I couldn't imagine being on holiday at such a happy place and having this happen. I too am curious if any precautions will be put in place now. Is it something that can be avoided?

I think any precautions put in place would have to take the public right out of the equation. Look at the people who go swimming in Australia despite signs warning of crocodiles and there would be a tendency in a place like Disneyland for people to just assume signs etc are just decorative and there couldn't be any genuine danger. You would need to keep the alligators away in the first place and given how large of an area WDW covers I would hate to have that job.

I agree. It'll be interesting to see if they take any action or put it down to a freak accident.

I think that action will have to be seen to be done.
Plus,  look at what they do to gorillas there,  and they are much cuter than alligators.

I think the people in charge of safety on the Parks grounds will be in overdrive at the moment, given that the shooter from the nightclub was also known to have cased and circled Disney Springs for up to 6 hours ( according to his cell phone pings, and also his wife's account) prior to changing his mind and heading to the club.  And then this with the little boy.
Such a tragedy, and I honestly wept when I heard that.
Since then though, its amazed me to read on FB pages all the places people have seen gators WITHIN the Florida parks... even in the water of Splash Mountain ( just little ones, but I knew there was a reason I've never ridden that ride) and hearing them 'waddling' past rooms on the ground floor .

I tell you what, only a few months out from my first trip there, I am even kind of vowing not to swim in the pools... can they get in there too?  The though of running into one on the walk home at night is def not on my bucket list.

It's a little odd to see Australians talking about the dangerous wildlife in another country...when they live in Australia! :-)

haha... Ikr?  anyway... I think its because we have the responsibility of safety firmly in our own court here as a general rule, whereas, in the US, safety is expected to be provided.  Even living a LONG way from croc country, we always had that kind of info drummed into us... everybody knew that being within a certain distance from water upwards of certain latitudes was asking to be croc lunch.  Even being on the waters edge was and is very dangerous in croc country.  But interestingly, despite a boom in gator populations, fatalities are down on past decades.  I wonder are they just not quite as aggressive as our crocs?  The thing that has genuinely shocked me is the literally hundreds of comments I've read today that state that they had zero cognizance of a gator possibly being in any of the Disney waterways... this boggles my mind.  How could there not be? it was once swampland ( well, from what I've read).
I in no way blame the parents... on the contrary, its so easy to be in the Disney bubble that you forget anything that might be a danger, and I've had the odd tear on their behalf. Its just so sad all the way round.

Not to mention the flesh eating bacteria that's in the water there.

The one that got me is people saying that the no swimming sign didn't apply because they were just standing in the water.

Now the flesh eating amoeba was a new one for me!!! def taking note of that.
a lot of people thought the no swimming was purely for covering Disney from lawsuits from drowning apparently.

But if you've ever worked with the general public then you know that signs are just there to be ignored.
